I'm updated... now... Lol..
Well looks like you might need to reduce the size of the exhaust housings? Spooling up that long isn't good and it sounds like your making enough RPM to do it. Having to run the bottle to get it up on the turbo's defintaly tells me it needs smaller housings.
Did you get the LS1 style ECM setup to work now? If so how do you like it?
I'm in the final stages of mine now. Hope to fire here pretty soon.. Might make Drag Week still but I'm on the "Wait List" anyway.. so not a big deal if I don't make it.
Talk to you soon,
Scott~

Ugh... I havent updated this or reloaded any of the pics.
I finally received my heads back from Speier and started mocking up the shaft rocker system. Noticed the stands are too short and need shimmed. Instead of shimming right away and grinding to back set them .050" for best geometry i contacted the manufacturer asking if they had other stands. They told me they were working on a new taller stand thats backset some to align the tip of rocker more towards center. So i am waiting for them to send the prototype for mock up and we will go from there.
Everything else has been put on hold. Wiring is 80-90% done, just wanted motor in car to finish wiring harness.
I think i need to redo the umi k member upper spring perches as i think i installed them on the wrong side. Angle is slanted wrong way i think so i will look at that.
My turbos are basically designed to spool at 4000 rpm. Car should shift by 6800-7000. My converter was only 3500 and thus my huge delay. I could run the small .68 housings again for quick spool but i felt they would restrict my power up top. My goal is top end monster. Having a slower spool and no bottom end helps keep traction and that i like. Car will be a highway roll king but trans brake will still get et's at the track

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z
To add, i went to have trans brake installed and my trans guy found burnt clutches and bushings so i had to rebuild. I was upset about that but he said trans had to be slipping the entire time last year and i still lazy rolled off a 10.5 at 137 on 12 psi and way conservative timing curve haha, short shifting 1000 rpm due to valve float and guide issues. So car will be a monster. After that pass i street tuned another 5 degs of timing into the car at same boost and completely transformed the cars character lol
Converter has been restalled to 4500-5000 rpm, somewhere in there. Basically back to my first combos settings. On tbrake with boost it may go to 5400 rpm but i will not leave any higher than 6-8 psi and 4500 rpm i think
Converting to hydroboost brakes too. Hope to get this pig to stop for once

Wow been a minute. Time to update.
Been working on the 24X efi conversion and putting the motor back together.
Decided to mount coil packs to the fuel rails using custom made aluminum brackets I made. Worked out nicely although abit busy
finished hydroboost install. Mounted the 4th gen master cylinder today
Hotside is bolted back up, exhaust is all in, and tranny/converter are mated to flexplate.
I used LT1 92-96 corvette MSD plug wires for these coil packs and it worked out nicely. The wires were alittle long in some locations but I was able to route them around enough to make up the length.
Motor is together and ready to start, after I bleed brakes and prime oil, fill trans up, few minor wires, etc. Hook up coldside feed pipe and thats it. Looking at Friday to turn on power and hit ignition.

looks good. glad your almost complete. Watch those cheapo valve covers, the rails like to warp and cause leaking issues.
I wanted to convert mine to hydro boost and was going to use one from a astro van. what system did you go with and how much did it cost. Also the 4th gen MC and stuff. How did you tap into the pressure line off the pump? pics would help.

I was gonna piece together a gm factory kit but decided to just buy new parts to keep it clean. I used hydratech braking for my hydroboost kit. I bought aeroquip lines and fittings to do the hoses. Ended up costing around 700 for all that, lines and fittings being 200-225 or so. Teflon stuff.
4th gen master is a dorman unit for 60-70 bucks i think it was?
I took the stock high pressure line and fitting off the powersteering pump and installed a direct line and fitting to the hydroboost unit. One line goes to the box and then the low pressure returns T together back to the pump reservoir

Yup could do it for cheaper but still need to fab a bracket spacer for it, pedal rod, and lines add up. Oh well, it was ready to bolt in so i cant complain. Lines and prepped unit, painted black for 700. Not terrible

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z
No thats not bad at all. If its bolt in your all set! I know the lines and fittings arent cheap. I was thinking if I did it I would use hydraulic hoses as they are cheap and the fittings are steel. Lines are rated to 2000psi+ but they are not teflon. I use the stuff all the time on my remote oil filter and my transmission lines. Basically a cloth covered steel braided line with rubber innards, fittings are steel AN.

Yeah lol thanks skinny! Thats the latest update.
Finished assembly and wiring, got the 411 ecm system running. Fixed an oil leak in the timing cover seal area, my mistake.
Then had to clearance heads abit for pushrods as they rubbed and made alot of tick noise so after that car was ready to go. Did street tuning for an hr and low boost pulls. Got to the dyno and started going. First pull no timing 7-8 psi it made 411 whp haha. Timing and leaner fuel made 493 at same boost. 80 whp gain not shabby. Started cranking it up.
621 at 12. Finishing 770 at 16.5.
Next week changed wastegate springs and got more boost out of it. 17 psi 793 whp. Then broke mid 800's, cracked thru 900's and no signs of issues. Kept turning. 999 on 24 psi. Sooo close. 24.5 and half deg timing it did 1006 and 1009 sae. Stopped for the day
Havent done much over winter. Now started new exhaust project. 5" single. hope to see 50 whp at high boost. Replaced plugs and fixed vband leaks. Ordering drag tires and wheels and hope to get out in next few weeks.
Hope to get meth kit later this spring and crank it to 1200 whp. Should go low low 8's mid high 160's

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z
It's a challange all the way through... I ende up doing Drag Week and found that I needed new tires... Just spun in 1st the entire week... Pretty darn frustrating... Car did great other than the no traction. Ended up 3'd in the Heads up Shoot out at the end of the week.. with over 100 cars in the shoot out.
Went down to Indy LSX World Finals with new tires and ramped the boost out 2.5 seconds and lowered the RPM to launch and got the car down the track with out lifting for the first time ever! She went 8.6@165 3 times almost identical passes.
In the spring I have some plans to improve the 60' and advance the cam some. Hope it can help my short times.
Good luck with the single conversion.. I like mine so far

Yeah i saw your updates on FB! That car is flying. My car is having some issues, electrical or tune now. Gotta datalog to see. Havent been able to make a complete pass this year after the first test hit of 9.12
Car is staying twin turbo. Gonna try put her on a diet and get couple hundred lbs out if possible haha. Gonna retune for big power and hopefully find my gremlin. I think the tune still has a overboost safe feature to yank timing and dump fuel which is killing the motor down.
Other than that car has been doing great

the reason i like it is because its something anyone can build in their garage with a cutoff wheel, chop saw and sawzall and a budget welder. Hand fabbed everything and it really wasnt all that bad once you got the hang of it and got the "vision" of what it is suppose to look like
This, at it's heart, is true hotrodding.

Lol thanks! No special tools here. Now the header tubes my buddy tig welded but i did the collectors and everything else. I wouldnt hesitate to mig these headers if i ever built another set.
Fun build, lots of ups and downs, but worth it after getting that 8 sec et slip

Looks good Orr… excited to see what you got planned? Why not just throw timed C4 explosions out the back and remove all the drivetrain lol… should push ya pretty quick.
What would be hilarious is if you went electric motor lol!
Got any more info on the hydra boost? I just ordered mine and had a custom bracket fabbed up… hope its here by friday. Getting the custom bracket, brand new bosch hydroboost for $381 shipped, guy who makes them is very chill dude in TX. I had him push the MC/hydroboost 1" farther toward the strut tower to put it in the OEM location on my 87 formula… Most kits, yours, and his put them around where yours is and needs a 4th gen MC to bolt up for more clearance… not sure why as the 4th gen doesn't look that much less robust than the OEM 3rd gen.

So far loving the hydraboost. I went 4th gen master to get a smaller looking unit and a reservoir with cap on it. I didnt like the snap fit lid on the thirdgen, and mine was going bad or needed bled because when i hit brakes, the fluid would leak out

Updates... New turbonetics 72 mm's are in and air water cooler system installed. Ready to retune
Welp. Makeshift intake system to get it driving last night. Waiting for my aluminum and proper couplers to come in lol. So far everything works. Car feels good.
Need to do some logs to see how close old tune is with new turbos, but so far 10 psi is spot on. Tried 14-15 i think and itblew the coupler off. Lol
Water system seems to work. Cant hear it in the car at idle so i guess thats good. No idea on iats yet since i have no logger

Update. Got a chute on it finally. Still need a cable and release handle. But looking good.
Done racing for the year tho.
Finished with a best of 8.24 at 169. Hope to do some more work next year and maybe get a 7.99. More left in the launch and first 330 but not quite a whole lot left in power i dont think lol

I'm never less than impressed with what you've done.
Well done Orr.
And good luck with that 7 second time slip.
PS. Still like the big front tires.

WOW! Congrats on the the upgrades/updates! Awesome job on the build. I am still working on mine, almost got it done and decided to change everything.
Again, killer build man. Your first setup with the videos are what made me decide to go turbo in the first place.

Man that car is nice.
I just spent a long time catching up with your progress. Fun to read about, but it sure looks like a lot of work!
I still wish you had been able to bring it down to Texas.
But I guess that would be a lot like trying to sail to Hawaii on a wind surfer, not very practical.
How do you like the air to water intercooler? I keep thinking that something like that mounted over the engine would save a lot of high pressure plumbing.

Guess it time to close this thread/chapter.
The 401" sbc lived a long tough life but it has come to an end. I leaned on it to hard and after ingesting some parts of the turbo failure, i failed to catch the issues early on and let it eat.
As a result the pistons were damaged, the heads were damaged and the block beat up on the main caps. Block and heads were repaired and sold. Pistons were total loss, skirts collapsing and wrist pin bends
Over 1200 whp estimated after dyno'ing 1097 on 3-4 psi less boost with fuel pressure issues, ran best of 8.24 at 169. Has seen 1.28 60 and was on a 8.1x pass but had coupler blow off at 1000ft. Was 5.32 i believe at the 1/8 at 136
Time for a new build and new thread
