cars not making boost =/

Hey, I sealed my manifolds completely and muffler cemented the flanges and what not to ensure a good seal and when i rev up the car, it doesnt make any boost, i cant even hear the turbo spool up... and the blow off valve isn't opening. HOWEVER when driving down the street I can hear the turbo spool up but it only hits like 2 psi and still the blow off valve doesnt open... any idea's?

appreciate any insight, thanks

FYI its a 5.83 psi spring in the wastegate with a MBC turned 3 clicks to 8 psi. The wastegate is sealed correctly and yes I do have the hose lines hooked up correctly as per the tial diagram. I'm thinking the blow off valve isn't opening because of a vacuum leak or something, but as for the boost, any idea's?

Re: cars not making boost =/

the car/turbo will not make boost in park or neutral. it needs load to spool boost.
you will hear the turbo whistle quite abit even if its not making boost.
as far as driving it and only boosting 2psi or so... im not sure. were you trying to spool it in first gear? i doubt it but it may not be enough load on it, try spooling it in 4th or drive.
what turbo are you using? what exhaust housing (t4, t6, what a/r?)

and the blow off valve will be open when the engine is idling, and closes when the port on it senses positive manifold pressure(boost) and the second the boost signal is gone(turns to a vaccuum signal the blow off valve will open again to release that extra pressure.

Re: cars not making boost =/

ive got a 5 speed and i assumed that a turbo would spool and make boost in every gear? Its a t70 with i believe a .70 cold and .86 or 96 hot

Shouldn't the turbo make boost even in neutral when I rev up the motor, I revved it to about 5 grand and it only read about 8 on the vacuum scale, not psi scale

and as for the blow off valve, instead of t'ing it into my one of hundred of vacuum lines, can i just drill into the plenum and make my own reference port for it, or does it have to be a specific vacuum source from the carburetor

Re: cars not making boost =/

that turbo SHOULD spool in every gear. (i just didnt know if maybe you were using some large 1.32 a/r borg warner or something. (that could be a little hard to spool))

the turbo will not make boost unless its on a two step rev limiter, which correct me if im wrong other turbo guys... but the two step cuts off spark to every other cylinder essentially dumping unburned fuel into the headers which ignites late enough/close enough to generate enough heat to spool the turbo before the vehicle is in motion...
(thats what i was told....)

and yes, you can go to the manifold for your blow off valve signal line (vac/boost)

i do not know why youre not spooling more then 2psi while driving, did you try turning the boost controller the opposite direction, because it sounds like if you tried to go from 5 to 8, you couldve gone the wrong direction and went from 5 to 2.....
or.... just try driving the car with out the boost controller or any lines to the waste gate at all, if you have a 5psi spring in it, it should make 5 psi, this is the way i run my JGS 50mm wg with a 7 psi spring in it.

Re: cars not making boost =/

i dont think the boost controller can take away from a springs pressure... but good idea im gonna take all the hoses and wat not off of the wastegate and just leave the side port hooked up to the manifold as this is neccessary, ill just vent the top hose out to the air

stupid complicated tial wastegate lol

Re: cars not making boost =/

i believe(might be wrong) a mbc can lower the boost from a specific wastegate spring, if it is putting manifold pressure under(boost) under the wastegate spring; making the wastegate open easier/earlier then normal....

my wastegate is a jgs, not a tial but i have mine with NO vaccuum lines to it at all, both ports vented....
and it makes exactly 7psi...........

Re: cars not making boost =/

Interesting, I was told that the rubber grommet inside the wastegate has to have the reference port hosed off to a boosted source, but i always questioned why that is, ill give it a shot venting the two ports

Got any tips of something I can use as a nipple for my BOV reference port if I tap into my piping or the air intake plenum? I was thinking a small copper pipe with some jbweld putty

Re: cars not making boost =/

still no boost... i can barely hear the turbo spooling, and i even took apart and reassembled my blow off valve, it stopped working again. I figured maybe the vacuum port i made was bad so i tapped into the port supplied on my edelbrock intake manifold, right in back of the rear fuel bowl, and its still not functioning... however when hooked up to an air compressor it certainly does the job, any idea's????

I did an intake leak test and the silicone nor piping is leaking, I also pressure tested the wastegate and its functioning properly, I tried three springs, a 5.83, a 8.7 and a 14.7 spring, any they all seal up fine, but its still not making the boost! I'm about to throw my block in the middle of the parkway

Re: cars not making boost =/

1) It sounds like you have a CBV, not a BOV. Disconnect the vacuum lines for testing purposes. When the CBV is in BOV mode, you don't need the vacuum lines.

2) What size engine? What size turbine flange (T4, T6)? What size turbine A/R? Who makes the turbo and what is the model number?

3) What are the test conditions? (what gear, mph, engine rpm)?

4) With a properly sized turbo you should not see boost while revving it up in park. Only the tiny 2.0 liter engine guys with very undersized turbos will make boost in park. They like this because the BOV sound excites them more than actual HP at the wheels.

If your exhaust is sealed, you have a reasonable turbine, and reasonable load from the engine then it should spool. If you had a compressor leak it would make a load whistle sound when it spooled. The CBV is not working because you are not making enough boost to cause it to open.
It sounds like you are not making enough exhaust for the turbine and wastegate. Have you tried testing with the wastegate FORCED closed to see if it is opening too easily? That is where I would start, but take it easy because if that is the problem you may overboost it on accident.

Hey did you retain the Check Valve for your brake booster?

my T-70 makes some power in the 500hp range in my old 350.

Re: cars not making boost =/

Its an hks ssqv bov and im not recirculating or anything so it should function as a blow off valve.

Its a T70 with I believe a .84 or .94 a/r on the turbine so it should be spooling up early and staying strong, the motor is a 350 and the turbo is a MP T70.

I've brought it up in thousand RPM increments up to 5000 rpms and its still weak.

I've even sealed the wastegate port and not run a wastegate to test it but that didn't work either.

The last test im gonna try is plugging the BOV port, I know compressor surge is gonna hit but if it works than I know its the bov not functioning correctly.

Also even if the car isn't making boost, shouldn't the blow off valve be opening and closing, I tested it on a leaf blower and it was definitely working

As for the brake booster, I drilled and tapped into my carburetor adaptor plate and made my own ports for pcv and brake booster allowing me to retain all the vacuum options

Do you guys think improper carburetor tuning and no timing could be the problem???

Re: cars not making boost =/

But you still need the ONE WAY CHECK VALVE for the booster or you'll be pressurizing the booster and losing psi

Re: cars not making boost =/

I took the entire silicone setup off, and just let the air blow straight out the turbo and i can definitely feel it blowing out, i'd say its the equivalent of deflating an air compressor, pretty powerful, so where is the air going???!!!

It's most certainly not leaking, and its not going out the blow off valve considering the piece of crap doesnt vent anything, i did a hand test for air and a soapy water spray test and no leaking, so my only guess is the air is somehow "evaporating" out of the compressor piping somewhere because it sure as hell ain't going into the motor nor registering on my boost gauge...

Do you need a PCV valve on a car like this?? Could the pressurized air be transfering into the valve cover ???? or does the PCV valve also work only one way, using vacuum, not pressure?

Re: cars not making boost =/

why don't you find a hill of about 7-10% grade, and go up it in 3rd gear? Punch it. That's how you'll build boost. Find out if you're building boost there.
Going up in 1000RPM increments (in your driveway?) WILL NEVER BUILD BOOST. The way you worded it made me think you're still not loading the engine. Your engine will drop it's vacuum, and start building boost - if you keep it loaded hard. Otherwise you'll just spin the compressor and not do anything.

Re: cars not making boost =/

no ive taken it down the block and it wouldnt do anything

BUT

I fixed it, a pipe actually bent under the pressure and was leaking, there was no way for me to tell cuz it was underneath the air intake plenum

I started it in the driveway and it does make boost while in neutral, i was able to hit 6 pounds at about 3+/- rpms

However the stupid blow off valve refuses to function properly, so im just gonna pick up a type s or something adjustable

THANK YOU GUYS tho so much for the quick responses and helpful advice, you guys are what make this site the best

Re: cars not making boost =/

PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldnt a blow off valve still vent even if the piping isn't under pressure... I mean some videos I watched online all the people had to do (while in park) was rev it up ever so slightly and you could hear the blow off valve and I doubt even small civics make real boost at 1500 rpm's... Mines not even fluctuating, I mean I can press in the piston with a screw driver and feel the gush of air blow out of it but it doesn't function normally...

I tried a vacuum port on the carburetor, a port off of the intake manifold, and even a port right off the turbo! and nothing is making this piece of crap open, I mean how humiliating would it be to show ppl ur BOV by sticking a screwdriver into the piston to make it actually open...

Can you SEE or touch the bottom of the BOV piston? If so, the BOV is installed backwards. Sounds like you have the BOV outlet hooked to the charge pipe. Pics would help people help you.

Re: cars not making boost =/

there is only one way to hook up an HKS SSQV BOV

for reference check out
http://hksusa.com/products/?id=3261

I basically have it installed just like this picture

http://www.velocityfactor.net/wwwroo...W-1.8T-300.jpg

Sorry Im at work so I cant take a picture of my own car, but yeah I have it installed correctly to where the chrome circle tri piece vents straight out to the atmosphere and I can fit a screwdriver into the chrome tri piece to press the piston in, thats how I'm able to access the piston, not like other BOV's such as the TYPE S or Turbo XS where the piston is unaccessible
