Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Thanks Will, just contemplating an exhaust tip and the exhaust is a wrap...

Small update, I rerouted the intake tube to go under the coolant hose, as I decided to install an aftermarket battery tray about 4-5 inches above the stock location, with the intake tube running underneath it. I had the battery in the back, but it was bothering me, and now it will look like stock, albeit a few inches higher. Also, this winter another turbo is going on, and now there is all the room in the world to pull the header off and replicate the other side. I'm still shooting to dyno if with the one turbo, just need to find the time...

I was thinking about that too, I started an LT1 intake swap awhile back, but needed to figure out the thermostat housing location. If I can find a decent place, I might go that route this winter along with you...

You can't see it in the picture because it is black, but it is right after the vacuum fitting that gets placed into the lower intake manifold, with two zippie ties fastening it in place. I used to have it closer to the PCV valve, but the vacuum hose would start wiggling under boost with it too far away, and I was concerned that it would start pulling/tugging and eventually lift the PCV valve out itself. We use Nissan brake booster check valves, they are extremely strong. We get them from the junkyards as freebies, but I believe they are like twenty to twenty five bucks in the auto part stores; p/n 05VR3, forget if that is the p/n for the steel ones though...

Thought about adding pcv back in my car. Along with oil air separator lol but the dual breather vent seems to work ok and i change my oil often enough

Yeah I remembered reading this build few months back, figured a turbo 305 would be fun build and given the mild whp level im shooting for would work fine. Id be happy with high 12s/low 13's once its together just to get my car going, do a more serious ltx next year. Best of luck sir and iv learned a lot from this thread

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Just a small update, and I'm sure Justin will like this one...

I've been invited to run at a track rental on October 24th over by E-Town Raceway Park here in Old Bridge, and the only thing stopping me is finalizing the battery tray, and the exhaust, which should be done shortly, so it looks like its a go for this year. The intake tubing is wrapped, and now goes "under" the battery, pending the new battery tray. In the pics below, you will see that I have a normal size battery (seven inches in height), which, believe it or not clears the hood, the hood actually closes with it. Its not level of course because it is sitting on the intake tube, but it will level out perfectly once sitting on it's new tray. However though, after taking a ride over by nearest parts store, they have batteries that are six inches in height, same strength, albeit being a little bit wider, but that isn't a problem for the tray I am fabricating, or for the stock tray for that matter. I might have to convert to top terminals though, but again that is an easy fix if I need to go that route.

Stay tuned...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Thanks guys, I've been looking forward to some track time for quite awhile, especially looking forward to seeing the trap speed. The streets can only tell you so much. Gonna throw the Mickey Thompson 315 drag radials on the back soon, and start prepping for the car to pass tech, although at a track rental they shouldn't really bother me with no cage. Should be a fun time, lots of cars there to run against. Got a score to settle with a Grand National lol...

What brand of head gaskets do you use? Iv been on summit looking around for a set for my ltx and only can find a cheap stocker for mine. Which I doubt could handle boost that well :/

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

The importance of a good plug. Rolled the car out of the garage today to stretch her legs, but she wasn't starting after I filled her with some gas. Pulled the plugs and of course they were saturated with fuel, but under the fuel was a whole lot of soot that I never took care of during initial tuning. Kept telling myself the alky will clean them, but I never got around to installing the razor kit yet. Long story short, plugs came out, clean them up, then said screw it and just bought some fresh plugs in they're place, and well, damn, entirely different car...

Battery tray is just about done, and I also went with a shorter battery because the price was right. Two cars I am looking to go against, one in particular, a Silver T-Type that smoked my C4-LT1 with a low eleven second pass over at e-town when I first bought her last year, so revenge will be sweet. Also wanna run my buddy's Grand National, but that will be a tough one, he's a solid 9.7x car, and there is plenty left in his setup to boot. GTA is still pulling great though, much harder with the fresh plugs, and I'm loving it. I'll try to get an in car video later tonight, but the damn car draws so much attention it is tough trying not to get pulled over...

Sounds like it needs more tuning. Thats what my car did, run rich and foul plugs to much and it wouldnt start

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

It honestly does need more tuning Justin, overlap keeps throwing the VE Learn off, so I have to hold back from having it Learn and go in manually based on how she feels. This is just 8-psi again because I only went up and down the street, as it is impossible to hold a camera and drive at the same time. Tires broke loose just before I let go on the way back. I need a better camera, and someone to hold it for me next time out. Sorry for the blurr lol, enjoy...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Getting ready to put the stock hood and wrap around spoiler back on, as well as touch up some paint here and there. I want her to look like a stock GTA body wise when she goes through tech and makes her passes Wednesday night, as I just called out another '87 GN (GNX, built freaking right), and it is set for next Wedensday the 22nd, two days before the track rental on the 24th. The 315's BARELY fit the 9.5" TT2's in the back, but they clear and that is the main thing. Only planning on running 15-psi Wednesday night, should be good enough to put me solidly in the 10's no problem...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Will, she go zero to a hundred... real quick!

I tamed this engine very well. Here is a quick startup and idle video, engine is in Closed Loop, and most of you know the size of the cam I went with. Way too big for the 305 most would say, especially with the stock throttle body, and stock cylinder head valves. Yeah, uh huh, sure. The engine idles perfectly at 900-RPM, rock solid, and never dips below that until I put it in gear. Vacuum is at 10". Coolant never see's higher than 180 degrees. Oil pressure never falls below 30-psi. Volt reading is solid. WUD data is perfect. Currently have the rev limiter at 5600-RPMfor the street, and that is because when there is a load, the RPM will shoot through the roof once the turbo spools up. I will set it to my targeted 6200 when at the track. Footage taken with the new I-Phone 6...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Above audio sounds muffled in the car, here is a quick video from the outside. Sounds pretty good even without the muffler installed yet. Vids were taken the other day, took awhile to upload because it's a different process from the phone's app. Still trying to figure out how to edit them though, as I am still used to windows media player for that, and have no idea how to do that just yet with the phone. Friend of mine is trying to get me to paint the car a dark blue metallic, I might go that route, and more than likely another turbo...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Hey guys. Last week was rained out, but we ran yesterday. Will post up the times when I get the video to post along with it so there are no doubts about the ET or trap speed. I only ran 15 psi, but damn, surprised the hell out of me. My buddy murph ran too, he rocked it with a 1.3 sixty foot low 9 second pass at about 26-psi. Just waiting on the video, should have it soon though...

Guys, I always update my thread when I have videos in hand and when I have the time to sit back and enjoy the hobby. A lot has been going on in my life and that obviously comes first. Justin, you can "think" whatever you want to, your entitled to that, but please respect this thread and don't post crap like that. I will try to update this thread when I have the time to.

I'll bet he was just picking on you Rob, being alot of the the threads usually fall off when people either don't run what they expected, or carnage threads with no pictures, etc.

Take your time. We will still be here.

I was wondering what the hell happened to you, lol.

This new setup should essentially annihilate that 122-mph trap speed at the same boost pressure, bigger cam, heads, and am more than likely going twins this time around. .
Old set up trapped 122mph in the high 11's due to traction issues, how are you planning on addressing the suspension to help get you into the 9's?

My car went a 10.14@133 with a 1.35 60' if that gives you an idea of what he needs to do. The further away from a 1.35he gets, the more mph he will need to run to get th same et. I didnt run much 1/4, so I dont have any 9.9x slips. I think I have a 9.7x somewhere but cant find it.

I will also add that it doesnt matter to me if the car fails to go 9s..... I really never expected it to. But it is an interesting build and would love to know how it runs. If it goes 10s I think that would be awesome! And at least you are able to have some fun with it. My car hasnt even run in 4 years now.

Will, I honestly was never big on posting just the slip because I'd rather the video, but that is just my preference. I made two runs on the weekend of the 24th as the Tuesday before that was rained out, and so was the Wednesday that followed. The second one there is video of, which is what I prefer to post up, and are the numbers that I shared with some of the members here who asked me in PM how it ran. At 15-psi the engine appears to be making close to 600 horsepower, the best sixty foot I could pull off was 1.75, the second was closer to 1.85 and the ET was three tenths slower at 11.36. Was running the MT 315's out back, but the converter was holding me back big time which is soon to be taken care of. If I bring it up to 20+ psi this weekend coming I will need an update to the EBL asap, as although the wideband seems essentially accurate without the update at that boost pressure on the street, RBob told me to update it immediately when I get the chance but I have been very busy this last week and a half, lot of things happened on a personal level unfortunately. Next weekend is the last weekend for e-town if anyone wants to come down and run with us. Will try to get the video up as soon as I can. If the slip only though makes everyone happy, here, I just got home, and just pulled it out. This is the first run...

Old setup was limited by the size of the injectors, and although the turbo was a legitimate T76 and not an ebay turbo, it catapulted me with the injectors going completely static. Now running lower control arms with MT 315's. The tires did not spin, they simply would not hold off the line this time around. My sixty foot should have been down in the 1.4-1.5 area, and it should have been a mid ten second run at 15-psi. 20-psi will get me in the nines with this setup, just need a better converter. This build raised the stall and flash point of the converter, but I need a much higher one to get off the line the way I need to...

Thats not bad at all Rob. Just need some tweaks and I am sure you can dial it right in. I think you shouldn't have trouble breaking the 9's with what you have done.

Congrats! Thats not bad at all! Thats about as fast a trap speed as my 383 did on a 150 shot.

5 more psi will get you mid higher 130's which will be close to the 9 sec zone but need a hell of a 60 ft

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Thanks guys but I am not satisfied with the ET at all. Trap speed I expected, in fact, earlier in the thread on the very first page I said I would be happy with just trapping in the nine second 1/4 mile range if I don't hit 9.99 ET, around 135-mph plus, and I am positive that it will happen at 20+psi. The sixty foot is killing the ET though. MT's don't spin, but the brakes don't hold past 1500-RPM on the line, which is why the sixty foot is bad and launches poorly, won't build boost off the line. If that sixty foot was 1.4-1.5 that 11.00 ET would have reflected a 10.50 ET, so hopefully most of you guys understand that, I know you racers do. Still haven't installed the torque converter, its just sitting in the garage. Pump gas, no alky, 19* spark advance @ 15-psi...

Oh i understand that. Before my transbrake my car would leave like a turd. In fact it still does with 1.81 60 ft off footbrake no boost. With trans brake i go 1.35-1.37!

Your mph will tell the story but you need a brake to 60 ft with a turbo car, or hit it with a 100-150 shot off the line to get things ignited
