Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Was going to wait for Spring time to come before I started a new thread for this build, but some of the new modifications will be taking place soon, so I figured I would document it as it was happening. Not going to get into every single detail like the last threads... as there really is no reason for that anymore, as almost all of you will know what I mean when I say that something was ported by me, programmed by me, or purchased from a specific vendor. The GTA has been in and out of the garage during the Winter, mainly just to have full access in the garage when I needed it, as the weather has been absolutely horrible. I pulled it out for the picture below, as well as to stretch its' legs a little. The goal of this project is to run a nine second pass, or to trap well into a nine second mph barrier (135-mph plus). There is no reason to get a baseline, as Tuned Port 305's will essentially run 14's in stock trim with a decent launch, so I am not going to bother with 1/4 mile and dyno vids running the bone stock engine...

The very first thing on the list to do is to upgrade the cylinder heads, camshaft, and intake system. The cam is already ordered, and I will post the details when it gets here. I am eyeing a set of 113/ZZ4 aluminum cylinder heads (1.94/1.50) and will more than likely be going with them, and working on them myself afterwards. I have an extra Tuned Port Injection system that I had ported awhile back that I also will be using for this build, and everything will be tuned by me using the autoprom for the time being. Once I am happy with the tune, I will start modding the 700R4 transmission a tad. The goal right now, before I even talk about and install the turbo(s), is to run 12 seconds in the 1/4 mile, or to trap at least 105-mph in the 1/4 mile naturally aspirated. Once the weather clears up she will immediately be taken to the track and filmed to confirm that the goal has been met. From there, it really starts getting good, so stay tuned, this is going to be fun...

I haven't been around in a while and surprised this thread is still going after a few years. Title still has 9s in it. Has it seen 9s or what is the quickest it has gone? I predicted 11s early on. Has it gone 11s? Just curious.

Hey Junk. The old setup trapped 122-mph at 14 pounds of boost with a 218/218 Lunati camshaft, ported heads and intake, but the ET suffered because of the sixty foot, it ran high elevens because the tires spun off the line. The car pulled an eleven second Grand National on the highway at 15 pounds of boost a few months after but I never took it back to the track to get another run in. This new setup should essentially annihilate that 122-mph trap speed at the same boost pressure, bigger cam, heads, and am more than likely going twins this time around. Took your advice by the way, grinded the brass off of the twin turbo exhaust manifolds I made and rewelded everything with much stronger rod. Figured with the 2-Bar MAP that I grabbed from a friend I will play around with the $8F code for the time being...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Oh Lunati, that Voo-Doo that You-Doo. Cam finally got here, got home from work earlier and was welcomed by a Summit Racing box by the front door. Didn't go with anything too crazy, but it's bigger than the 218/218 camshaft that I was playing with the first time around, that's for sure. Specs are in the low to mid 230's on the duration, and a tad over .500" on the lift, should compliment the 113/ZZ4 heads very well, but the heads are still pending. Also reusing the set of CompCam 1.52 roller rockers from my former build. Can't wait to stick it in there, should make her fawkin scream, hehe. In she goes...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

The intake setup I will be using is the stock TPI system that I modified awhile back. The runner ports have been siamesed, and the intake ports have been opened up as much as they are able to go. Not going to throw a up too many pictures per post, trying to keep only one per post, so please take my word on the intake ports. The fuel rail has been modified, as the front fuel entry has been cut off and tig-welded shut. I will be using the cold start injector location in the rear of the fuel rail for my fuel feed, and will be tapping the base of the fuel regulator w/fuel fitting for the return. Both lines will be braided. I don't want any fuel lines by the front of the engine. I also converted the stock regulator to an adjustable one. I also added a coolant port by the waterneck to keep the hose away from the downpipe...

Lol since my motor is out i kinda wanted to throw in a stock 305 and see what i could do, but likely not going to happen. Glad to see you still working this out.

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Been collaborating with RBob in PM, and I agree with him in that I'm just going to install an EBL-P4 as opposed to borrowing an autoprom and burning my own $8F code. Took a real good look at that code since I started this thread, and it seems that there is definitely an area for concern, but I'm not going to criticize any code in this thread by labeling it a flaw, I'm just going to move along with the build and go with his Flash system. Besides, I believe Bob is adding some cool features to the EBL-P4, so it defeats the purpose for me to waste any time burning proms...

I really would have liked to have seen that, I'm hoping that more and more members build boosted 305's, or at the very least, get inspired to build one after this thread is said and done. Very curious to see what this engine makes without the turbos once it is on the dyno, but the heads are still pending though because the seller is trying to sell things along with them that I don't need. Might get stuck porting the stockers one weekend again, and I can't stand porting cast iron. What a mess it makes...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Weather is starting to finally get warmer, the Tuned Port Injected 305 that I will be using is stock with low miles, never rebuilt, and was never bored out like the last one that I used, it's definitely a true 305. I do not care "what" happens to this engine, so I will be cranking up the boost when all is said and done. Gonna get this engine on the stand and start pulling things off soon, cleaning it up thoroughly, and hitting the block with some cheap engine paint to make it look a little more presentable at the track. Track opens early April this year...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Only reason i am hesitant is my twin 70mm's. way to big for a 305 so id have to swap out.

My plan is to sell my 99 trans am and pick up a lower miles 305 tpi formy lol. That one i will build kits for and see what i can do. But probably going to remote turbo the 99 for this summer to have alittle fun

Its just that my 89 is fully setup to run 9-10's sec times so it be a great base to try on

Hey, I hate to be an imposition but can I get you to take the mani from the passenger side and stick it on the drivers side flipped forward and down then take a coupla pics? Trying to work out a fitment issue or three on my project, and I think a TPI mani may be what I need to easily throw a turbo system in.

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Let me see what I can do Drac, we're actually headed down to Atlantic City in a little while, and prolly won't be back near the car until Monday night for some additional updates and whatever pics I can hook you up with. Take a little advice though, don't weld the exhaust manifolds if you go that route, nickel braze them if you can...

That's the reason I need a few pics of the TPI mani on that side. It may be my solution to a "no weld" manifold install in my application.

I would do that if i was absolutely certain the dimensions were the same. The mp .68 housing isnt even same as the mp .96 i have. 1/4" or so wider so that throws off my wastegate alignments and i am not ready to fix that just for the 305 experiment. I would redo downpipe section which isnt a big deal. Maybe in another car or next yr. this year i am chasing 8's

Umm no. I think the dizzy would hit, and not only that but if and when the TPI goes it's getting a single plane stuck in its place.

I was talking about the exhaust manifold. I think it's possible it may clear my steering linkage well enough for me to flip it up front and run my crossover that way.

ahhhh, thought u were talking about fliping the tpi manifold , it would hit the dizzy but thats nothing a lt1 oil pump drive and 60-1 toothed wheel on the balancer couldnt fix

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Winter isn't going away without a fight it seems. Got hit with another snow storm yesterday, and its been way too cold to do any work to the car before that. I've been spending very little time after work taking the engine apart, as I got the stock TPI system, brackets and heads off of the 305 engine that I will be using for this project, and its down to the short block. Didn't get a chance to pull the pan and look at the mains and bearings yet, but the weather is supposed to be getting better so I should be wrapping that part up soon. More than likely going to port the stock iron heads one weekend, as they give me the final compression ratio that I need in conjunction with the Cometic MLS gaskets I have for this project, and shouldn't take me longer than a day or two to get them done. The idle is going to sound sick with this Lunati camshaft...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

This shot is the engine just after I got my hands on it, and had it running in the car... essentially checking for any unusual sounds, etc. Oil pressure was still very good, and she idled great for what it is. The distributor wiring needs to be finished, as I switched back to running the fat cap distributor with the coil in the cover to keep less clutter and more room to work with in the engine bay. The stock GTA serpentine belt setup will be replacing the older v-belt setup, I also modified the stock serpentine setup to accomodate the turbo(s). Since this picture, the heads were removed, and the block has been lifted and cleaned up, but no paint applied yet. I want to give the engine bay a thorough cleaning before I paint the engine, and am throwing this picture up to give the before and after effect. This is just after I pulled the stock lower manifold off...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

I write twins like twin(s) because I am still unsure which route I am going, single turbo or twin turbo. Mocked up a set of single turbo headers I was working on awhile back with this engine using a T4 flange, and was thinking about using a T72 turbo that I nabbed a few months ago rather than the twins that I didn't even buy yet. I have the perfect true dual exhaust setup for twins that bolt directly to the twin turbo cast exhaust manifolds that I originally welded for this project, but a single is so much easier in terms of space, weight, and future headaches. Would still need to weld a bracket from the turbo flange to the header flange, as well as some additional grinding because it isn't quite finished just yet, so its still up in the air. Still pissed off that I am talking myself into porting the stock heads, but I digress...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

I think I am going to go single turbo after all, was thinking about it and trying to convince myself to go twins, but it is easier to just do the former as opposed to the latter. I have a nice TCI converter that is going to compliment the Lunati camshaft very well, not to mention I need to focus on the overall weight to boot, and the T72 should get me where I need to be in terms of power. Not too many choices for an aluminum water pump though, but Summit Racing has one made by Stewart that I am going to order this week. Gonna keep trying for a somewhat decent deal on those 113 heads, because I really don't feel like porting the stockers, not to mention drilling an tapping the passenger one for the serpentine setup to bolt to. Going to finish the turbo headers this week too, just need to weld a six inch support bracket from the turbo flange to the header flange, as well as finish welding the wastegate flange behind the turbo flange...

Have no idea if I will even bother coating them or not...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Finally have the day off, going to try to pull the stock cam today and install the Lunati Voo-Doo camshaft that I picked up from Summit Racing. Took me awhile to find my roller rockers cuz I forgot where I placed them since the last build, but I just stumbled across them. Once those heads are done I'll have the engine buttoned up with some idle and take off video's before I slap the turbo on. Weather has been nuts, it was beautiful out yesterday, yet now its freezing out today with heavy freaking winds, but I'm going to try to get as much done today as I can. I got your PM bro, I'll shoot you a text this weekend...

Yep. This weather is tragic. Hmu on saturday. I can probably swing through after work if im not jammed up. Gearing up for phase 2 soon on the blue camaro also, so it may be you your one chance to see the car half assed together. Im excited to see the progress on your car. Did a quick test in mexico w a friend last night with his lt1 LE2 setup. Kept up nice till i blew the tires away. Should be real fun this summer.

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Just a quick update, came really close to buying a Holley Stealth Ram intake but talked myself out of it because the siamesed TPI system should do just fine, and I would rather apply the money to the alky system. No intercooler on this setup, boost will go straight from the turbo to the throttle body with alky substantially cooling the charge, but more on that later. I did buy some bling in the form of a chrome timing chain cover and a few other items, and will post some pics of the short block when those parts get here and are installed. I have to redo the transmission lines, or just buy stock ones, because the ends on the stockers were cut to accomodate a trans cooler that I bought years ago, and I don't want clutter, so they will plug back into the radiator where they belong, albeit a bigger aluminum radiator. I started on one cylinder head and should have the other one done shortly. Weather still freaking sucks to be doing all of this, especially on a work night...

The hsr is nice especially in the upper rpms. Would require a .9X ar. to take.advantage of the hsr w boost. I think it will do great with the siam. tpi setup. Are you gonna run e85? Btw you ready for the craptastic weather this week?

I might have to run E85, and luckily there are three stations in Jersey that sell it. The stock cylinder heads look like they might have been shaved down in the past, there are no visible stampings for any cutting that may have been done by the machinist that I can see though, but they do look cut through comparison with other cylinder head sets that I have. Weather wasn't too bad this week, just still kinda cold to be working on the engine...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Just started on the second cylinder head as I am writing this, as I really need to clear my head and what better way than working on the engine. Just wanted to show you guys how poor the factory cylinder heads really are, and this is why I get a kick out hearing people actually compare "stock" 305's with 350's and other types of engines. On the right is the factory intake mold, and on the left is me after about twenty minutes of porting. There were a total of six, yes six speed/velocity bumps in each intake tract on the bottom side alone, as the top side has about two per tract. Still need to port deep into the tract and will have the two on the left completed and polished up shortly. Valve guides were taken down all the way already, and will then flip over and start work in the bowls...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Cylinder heads are done and ready to be installed, short block is painted and sitting in the engine bay with the camshaft lubed up, installed and ready to be broken in. Went with a new harmonic balancer because the stock one slipped. Still need to drill and tap the passenger head for the serpentine bracket, but I'll do that when the heads are down and secure. Gonna see how the engine does with the GSP T72 first, then up it later on with another that I have. Weather is set to be in the sixties next week, finally...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Thanks bro.

Gonna start picking up the pace fella's, today was 75 degrees, unreal, took forever to get here but at least now I have no more excuses in getting this build wrapped up. I also nabbed a new daily driver cuz I can't drive the GTA on a daily basis anymore, well, I can, but with that cam, that turbo, and my foot, gas mileage will be ridiculous lol. It's an '05 GAGT, but so far I am not impressed with the performance. Have a buddy that has an RMS supercharger that I might buy for it, either that or slap the turbo up top onto it once the GTA is finished with it. Pretty sweet car, but the Sonata next to it will destroy it lol. How low the once mighty have fallen...

keep it stock, you will have your hands full just fixing all the crap that breaks on those grand dammits.

its pretty sad how american automakers now build plastic econoboxes and to have anything with performance you have to buy a camaro, mustang, POS dodge, etc. what ever happend to building affordable econoboxes that offered a sport package? turbo K cars(and the van LOL), GTZ's, Z24s, old calais W41, etc. etc... all the rice burners have 'em.

/tirade

still watching to see the 305 run!

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Haha, I feel your rant Joe. Not going too go crazy with the Grand Am though, maybe rims w/tires, full exhaust and the RMS w/Vortech SC @ 8-psi. Shouldn't break anything because I won't be launching it, just need a little more power from a roll, she's too slow for me. The GTA on the other hand I will be flogging lol...

Mars put down some good power with his supercharged 3400 years ago, although he had the getrag. not sure if that 4t60E will slip with the added power? I had a 99 and the trans started to slip by 55K miles, and the intake gasket discintegrated at 90K.

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Next up for this build to be ordered are the injectors and engine control module. I simply don't have the time for soldering, so I am going to order the EBL-P4 assembled and ready to go. Still contemplating which knock filter route I will be going, but I still have time to decide. Would also like to make a video instruction on how to install the EBL-P4 as well as tuning characteristics if there is enough time. Injectors will be sixty pounders used in conjunction with a DW300 Deatschwerks fuel pump, with alky, of course...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Had a little problem getting the stock camshaft out not too long ago, damaged the cam bearing nearest the timing chain because I completely forgot to make additional room after pulling the radiator, so the distributor gear on the camshaft "nicked" the bearing. Ordered a new set from Clevite and popped it into place with the correct tool. Also made another mistake out of pure laziness when I replaced the timing chain cover, I didn't remove the starter, thus couldn't get to all of the oil pan bolts, and tried to pry down the front of the pan to get the timing chain cover back on and into place. Long story short, the lip on the front of the pan bent a little and I can't risk any oil leaks running the turbo, so I just decided to toss the stock pan. Blessing in disguise maybe, as I used it as an excuse to order a new Summit chrome pan, high volume Summit oil pump, magentic drain plug, one piece oil pan gasket, Summit Pro-Street damper, Lokar flexible dipstick, and Spectre chrome timing chain cover. The Lunati camshaft and new lifters are already in the engine at this point...

Had to send back the damn oil pan and gasket because they sent me the wrong one, they sent me one for a two piece rear main seal, not a one piece seal. I kept everything else though and reused the stock oil pan after hammering it back into place. Just need to take care of some minor things since I had to pull the engine again, like new transmission lines to the radiator, etc. Also talked myself into an FMI. Plenty of pictures and videos coming soon...

Re: Chronicles of a 9 Second 305 Trans Am...

Still waiting on the freaking transmission lines, I don't want to have to drop the transmission again, and I need room to get them on, so I can't put everything back on just yet until they get here and are installed. Once I get those on the rest will be cake. Everything is there ready to go, injectors are here, heads were painted aluminum to match the TPI system, just waiting on the EBL-P4 in terms of firing the engine up. The engine block is coming along nicely, much better than when I first put it in. New knock sensor, new oil pressure sender, new K&N gold oil filter, Mobil 1 full synthetic oil, etc. This was taken awhile back, just after bolting it back to the transmission. Modified the serpentine system big time, wait til you guys see it lol...
