please explain how this search function works

I'm trying to find some info on the self-adjusting parking brake on this frickin 92 car, and the search feature refuses to return results on the following:

self adjusting parking brake
self-adjusting
self+adjusting+parking

why does this happen, and how can i get around it? I know the reason it gives me, but I don't care if it takes 1000 posts to dig though. better than 40000 posts.

I get search results for your first entry: self adjusting parking brake. self is considered a search stop word (perhaps in part for usages such as yourself, etc.) Common words like that are omitted in many search engines. You should still get decent results, though, as the term is simply thrown out while the rest is searched for.

I was able to use + operator, but you need to have spaces between each set of operator/keyword for separation.

I believe the recommended method is to use quotes around keywords to help also narrow down the results, such as "self adjusting"

Using all methods even picked up this specific thread/post you created.

Re: please explain how this search function works

Oh, I definitely get results, but it just dropped 'self', so the relevant threads usually get missed.

I understand dropping a more 'generic' word, used by itself, but for a string of words, it's just frustrating. it should use all the qualifiers instead of 'deciding' to just drop some. I know it isn't particularly this search engine per se, but this one does seem to do it more often than others I've used.

I will try out the suggestions you've mentioned, it sounds like the quotes may help. thanks for the quick response, my original thread was borne from frustration in trying to find information and might seem a bit harsh.

Re: please explain how this search function works

Use quotes around "self adjusting" appears to get around self being a stop word from my findings. Using quotes around keywords is what I've been told is the recommended procedure for best and specific results.
