Re: Engine swap regulations in Texas smog counties
It will be OBD II after that if it is still injected. As long as all sensors are good the computer will send ok codes and it will pass and not have to touch the dyno. But a big cam and what not will send it down hill.
Re: Engine swap regulations in Texas smog counties
in Texas when a car goes in for inspection, its typed in by model year of the car, not the year of the motor. so for an 87 it still goes on the dyno. the sticking point is the emissions components.
my car never came with TPI fuel injection. i asked about it when i got my state inspection license & they couldn't really give me a good answer at the time. the only emissions part my car doesn't have that the stock motor had is a hot air tube, but because there is no place for 1 they said it doesn't need it. as long as its clean at the pipe & everything looks right under the hood & you have cats you should be ok, at least thats what they said about my car.
Re: Engine swap regulations in Texas smog counties
PER THE BOOKS (my wife was the supervisor at DPS for department than covered all the inspection stations, which means smog testing) you can put newer engines in older chassis, but not older engines in newer chassis. Like, an older 327 in a 3rd gen.
Or if that chassis never came with that engine, like a big block in a 3rd or 4th gen. By the law, you can't do it.
Not that any of the inspectors care enough to look that hard.
And all OEM equipment must remain on the chassis/engine. If it came with a cat, it still has to have one. If the engine came with AIR tubes, they must be on there now.
Besides, it's still my argument, that if the REAL purpose behind smog testing is to reduce emissions, then JUST put the probe in the tail pipe & test! If the #s are good, then you pass. If not? You fail. I mean, if my engine runs clean without the AIR tubes & cat, who cares HOW I got the #s, as long as I got them.
Re: Engine swap regulations in Texas smog counties
Several responses come to mind.
1.) Stephen is exactly correct -- in TX, the purpose is more revenue
enhancement than emissions reduction.
2.) The rules are clearly the rules. And its also clear, that many of
the ya-hoos inspecting vehicles are (a) illiterate, and can't read
the rules, (b) younger than these vehicles, which means that
considering (a) they're not highly motivated/skilled to do research
re: rule specifics.
3.) Search this forum for a shop on Fairmont Parkway, that is highly
recommended, i.e., knows how to work with our vehicles.
4.) There are board members who know where inspections can be
purchased, regardless of vehicle condition -- and priced accordingly.
Re: Engine swap regulations in Texas smog counties
Thanks for the advice. I'm in the buying phase of an engine rebuild on the L98 - and hopefully some brakes from ebMiller. With 170k on the clock, maybe it was time for a rebuild anyway. Anybody have an AIR system off an 88+ TPI they're willing to part with? Surely someone has one already off the car and lying on a shelf...
