Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

I'm going to throw the Z on craigslist today. Out of 3 projects this is the only one that doesn't hold any sentimental value. It has been in storage for the last few months because the HOA was threatening to sue me.

So, this is what I need help with. The car has a TPI Lingenfelter 383 in it. It ran pretty solid until I tried my hand at tuning. Now when I put it in gear it dies. And for some reason when I turn the headlights on it sets off a very annoying tone. I thought I had downloaded a tune that was meant for the TPI vettes that Lingenfelter was builing at the time. Obviously I did something wrong. I have all the good stuff from Moates to do live tuning. What I don't have is the knowledge, patience, or time.

So if anybody can help, please let me know. Just name your poison.

My work schedule is pretty horrible right now. I'm off today and tomorrow and then Friday and Saturday, switching days and nights every shift. I live in Friendswood and the car is at Uncle Bobs storage on FM 2351.
Thanks folks.

Believe me it wasn't what I wanted. The house I was buying got flooded and I didn't have flood ins. This was the only place I could get into after my credit got destroyed. Luckily it is only a rent house. Once my credit gets back up there I will be moving into something much more remote.

Re: Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

Hey everybody, it's been awhile since I've visited the thirdgen forums. Actually I haven't seen my third gen in awhile either. She has been sitting in storage and I haven't even seen her in over three months. I have a couple questions. I found a guy through a friend that can handle my title situation. So I'm hoping that once the car is in my name it will light the hotrod fire in me again. I will still need help with the tune and was hoping somebody local could be bribed with beer(or cash) to help me out. I have the Moates stuff to do it just not the know how. Or the patience to learn on my own. This would still be a couple months down the road because I'll need to get tires and brakes done.

Now, if the title thing falls through, does anybody know this guy? http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/4686140600.html
Is he a member on thirdgen or any other f- body forums. I would sell the car as long as it won't be stripped down and sold for parts.

All feed back is welcomed.

Re: Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

Just get a bonded title or talk to the dps and see what can be worked out. The stalling ptoblem sounds to be a bad pick up coil? In the dizzy. The one that sends the rpm to the dash. It sound odd but my car did it before. When i went from park to reverse or any other gear, my car would die. If you do sell it, whats your price and how does she look?

Re: Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

My buddy assures me his guy can get the title done easy. We'll see what happens.
The car actually ran pretty good before I tried my hand at tuning. The check engine light was on and I had planned on doing a few upgrades. That's why I started messing around with the moates stuff. Didn't work.
The car is in fair condition. The paint is pretty much ruined from sitting outside. I have kept one of those reflective sunscreens in the windshield and a blanket over the interior. The dash is not cracked. Could use a shampooing. I also have all the paperwork the OP collected while doing his engine build. He even took notes from his conversations with Lingenfelter. If I were to let it go as it sits I would want 4K for it. If I get the title the first thing I will do is replace all the brakes and hoses, put tires on it and get the tune figured out.

I also forgot I had a B&M blower sitting around. I'll have to go through the paperwork and see what the CR is. I may rip out all the FI stuff and put the blower on there.

His reason and I quote "I do this to keep third gens on the road" And this was after I seen a Blue IROC that looked in good condition in his drive way being dismantled also he sells those parts high and his garage and back yard are full of parts

Those people make me sick. All those cars (in his cl ad) are perfectly good cars. Sadly, people strip low mile snowmobiles also to part out when people would love to buy them to ride and enjoy. If you part cars, you should do so with cars that have something wrong with them, not perfect low mile cars! So they just profit because the previous owner babied their car and was trying to sell it to someone else to baby, not to rape.

That's what I needed to know. I have thought about parting the car out but could never do it. The car really doesn't need a ton of work to be a badass toy. Time just isn't on my side right now. Too many projects and not enough time or money. I'll keep trying to get her back on the road. Still, I will need somebody to tune or help me tune.

That guy john is terrible I would not buy or sale anything to him.

Everything he sells is overpriced and it is not all quality parts.

Sail has done a lot of tuning on his TPI, Turbo, Z-28, but he is on the south side.
You're in spring aren't you?

I've also only heard good things about 1bad91z.

Yea. Spring. I really don't have any clue when it comes to the tpi ecm tuning capabilities. I'm trying to get him to run ms. But he wants to keep and run w stock electronic s which look like may b the limiting factor.
I'm just doing all the fan n install n let him worry bout the tune.

Op sorry for hijack.
Good luck w your car.

I think I talked to 1bad91z a long time ago about helping me with the tuning, but I had a few things I wanted to get done before I got to that point. Then life happened and the car ended up in storage.

I have asked a couple shops in the area about TPI tuning and I usually get the same response, "TP what?".

If 1bad91z is still doing the tuning I will look him up when/if I finally get to that point. It's nothing but money right?

You should also PM SailTX.
He is in your area and may be able to help.
I know he has all the equipment to tune it, but he may not know what you need done. If you know, he may be able make the changes for you.

I've got the gear to tune TPI stuff, but you have to mod the ECU to accept a ZIF socket before ya can do anything tuning wise.

its about $425 to get setup for tuning a TPI car FYI if you want all the stuff, a holly EFI system is $15OO... the TPI stuff is not really worth it unless you REALLY want to for some reason..

im trying to get him to run megasquirt.
another car i just built is making 795rw with it. it was at 680rw. but got biger injectors now.
idk why he wants to keep the tpi deal really.
the ms is around 500$ and we can tune it in house.
so i guess were going w the tpi tuned computer for now.
its a forged 355 w afr heads and t5. its a maf car if that makes any difference in tuning.

So what exactly are we looking at there?

From top center, going counter clockwise, I would say:

USB chip programmer ("Burner")
ZIF socket
Chips
more chips
"Emulator cable" (is this for an "ostrich"?)
A-B USB cable
and what ???
Is that an ODB data logging cable with an RJ-45 plug on the other end? Would you plug this into the network port on your lap top? I'm a little confused with this one. It could be an RJ-11, hard to tell on it's side, but that might make more sense as at least a modem is a type of serial device.

Re: Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

USB chip programmer ("Burner") YES
ZIF socket YES, this is a "G1" or "G2" adapter, connects to the ECU so you have a ZIF socket for easy chip changes
Chips YES

more chipsYES

"Emulator cable" (is this for an "ostrich"?)YES, there is another "black box" this is called an "ostrich" to complete the emulator setup

A-B USB cable YES, that goes from your computer to the "ostrich", from you computer to the chip burner, or from your computer to the OBD data loggin cable and "black box"

and what ???
Is that an ODB data logging cable with an RJ-45 plug on the other end? Would you plug this into the network port on your lap top? I'm a little confused with this one. It could be an RJ-11, hard to tell on it's side, but that might make more sense as at least a modem is a type of serial device. OBD data loggin on one side, the other... I'm not sure it looks broken honestly, there is usually a black box on that end with a switch to vary the resistance to data log for different ECUs[/QUOTE]

Thanks Sail.

BTW, I've never done it...but there is a pretty good write up for making your own ALDL cable here:

Here is the link to the package I got. It says it does the emulation also.

https://www.moates.net/apu1-autoprom....html?cPath=64

Does everything in one package, one USB-based device! USB-powered, so no power supply needed. Chip burning/reading, datalogging, and realtime emulation. Performs ALDL communications at 160/8192 baud, programs AT29C256 and 27SF512 chips. Has 3-channel 0-5v 10-bit A/D provision fpr wideband and other datalogging. Includes AutoProm device, 28-pin 18-inch emulation cable, OBD1-style ALDL cable CABL1, 6-ft USB cable, 2x 27SF512 chip, and Mark Mansur's TunerPro RT5 software license. PLEASE READ through product documentation to understand some of the features of this all-in-one, datalogging, realtime emulation tuning, and chip burning hardware. This item is for OBD1 GM vehicles ONLY. It is not for Hondas, Nissans, Fords, BMWs or other cars. That is nice!
Should be pretty easy to tune with that setup.

Re: Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

Since you have everything you need to tune it. If you can operate the equipment, it would seem that all you need is advice on what to change. Anyone with tuning experience, EFI or carbureted, not necessarily TPI, should be able to help you with that.

While getting a perfect tune can be tricky, engines are generally pretty tolerant of imperfect tunes. Close enough should not be that hard to find.

Re: Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

I have TunerPro RT v5 software on my laptop from moates. I have also spent a bit of time on the DIY PROM section and picked up enough info to get started. But the tuning is very involved and requires a lot of research. That may not seem like a big deal to some people but I get impatient when I don't see immediate results. Pretty sure that's why I'm overweight and have 3 unfinished cars.

Re: Gonna sell her, need help with a half azz tune

its way less frustrating if you use the emulator and make changes while the car is running (instant results), burning chips and restarting every time is very irritating!
