Anybody know of a good exhuast shop in the area (Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham...)? I'm looking to do a dual system so most of it would be a custom job, and a recommended shop would be a comfort. The local Mineke is actually advertising Custom/Performance Exhaust work, but I don't really know if trust that route. I think it is because they recently began selling knock-off FlowMasters. I talked to a performance shop around here (Blazing High Performance) and they didn't seem too interested.
There's a little privately owned muffler shop on Angier Ave. in Durham - talk to that guy. Sorry, name of the shop escapes me now. Take 147 south, exit on Briggs Ave North (go under bridge and exit), then at stop sign turn right onto Pettigrew, then at next stop sign turn left onto Glover, cross tracks, and turn right onto Angier Ave. About 2 blocks down on the left is a small shop. This guy has benders, various pipe sizes in stock, welds great, can make custom hangers, the whole bit. And he's not usually real real busy, and available to talk about the project beforehand (especially in mid day).
So I drove along Angier Ave in Durham and didn't find any good shops. There was one, but no one spoke English. Though a body shop on that street referred me to Allen's Muffler near Trinity St. Sound right?
The one I was referring to should be on the southern corner of Angier Ave. and either Miday Ave. or Carter Ave. But he may have closed in the bad economy - I wouldn't expect it, but anything's possible.
I highly recommend R&J Custom Exhaust in Apex, 919-362-6630. Only true custom exhaust shop in the area AFAIK, Robert is the owner and does all the exhaust work and will do whatever you want, he's done it ALL when it comes to exhaust from racecars to choppers to monster trucks to thirdgens, he's in there daily by 6 or 7am fabricating and welding.. I've had him do a Camaro and an S10 of mine and several friends go there to finish off our builds. I had dual once and you gotta keep the heat away from the tranny pan IMO, when I went to a Hooker cat back I was happier than w/ the dual. But if you want dual they'll do it! If you go tell the shop manager you want to talk to Robert about a custom job and then tell Robert Len sent you!
3813 capital blvd, Raleigh. Their phone number is 919-850-2007 cell 919-609-7308
Interesting! I didn't even know about them, I'll have to look them up one day, they look like they know what they're doing too.. I'll still stay loyal to R&Js tho just since I know the owner and he's an actual, honest, reasonable guy that fabs exhausts all day every day.. That's funny how similar their names are..

Yeah they are a sponser on a local board and they have given great service to the members. I think the 2 names were brought up also lol. Very similar.
I have true duals on my track car and I had the hooker cat back on my street car. For the price of the hooker catback you cant beat it. I got mine a few years ago before the prices went up.
Thanks, I'll be sure to check them all out. Why do you prefer the Hook Cat back to the duals?
Once I had duals and there just wasn't enough room down there. Then the pipes were too close to the tranny, which overheated, I'm not sure if it was related or not... Once I went to the Hooker cat-back I was thrilled w/ the clearance, the sound & the location of it.
ok i dont think anyone has said anything about this on holloway st there is a place called ace's tire and muffler. All the guys are hispanic but the owner and his brother. i have had him do all 3 of my cars and for a real flowmaster custom pipes and hangers $150. He is great i drove the tailpipe of one of my cars into the asphalt just by accident on a big hill and his weld was rock soild. If your in chapel hill come down 54 until you come to the intersection of 54&55 then turn left. go all the way down 55 until you see holloway st. turn right go down about a mile and you'll see his little garage on the left. the intersection of his shop is holloway and hyde park.
