ARGH! lug nut lock key?

Moved car to inflate tires...long story short im almost on my rim and attempting to switch to spare tire except.... the guy i bought my car from who lives on the clear otherside of town (long drive) forgot to include the lock nut key with the car! standard lock nut that came with the car.
no one not pep boys, the gm dealerships or tire places carry this and i dont want to drive to the other side of town. only good thing from this is I checked out a few salvage yards and had some fun checking out all the f bodies. sad to see some destroyed but what can I say everytime I looked at a wreck I kept thinking to myself (Oh the possibilities for all these pretty things) yeah guess thats a typical car guy. anyways anyone have a spare key that they dont use? I'll pay for the shipping, and whatever is fair for the key? or any suggestions on how to get this off.

Re: ARGH! lug nut lock key?

I never heard of a factory wheel lock for these cars. I would look to autozone for a removal kit or go get the key from the previous owner. If they are the "Outside" lock style, you can sometimes hammer a socket onto it and then turn them off. Can you post pics of the locknut? Might be able to help you, then.

Post up some close-up pics of the locknut and I can probably help you get it off.

Re: ARGH! lug nut lock key?

I had this problem last week on a Ramcharger that had locks on it. I used a 1" China made impact socket (1/2" drive 6 point) put an old breaker bar on it and hammered the end of the bar straight on the lugnut locks with a 3 pound hammer.
It didn't hurt anything and the lugnuts unscrewed right off. A quick wack on the lugnut popped it off the socket with no problems
That Ramcharger had 1/2 studs so you probably need to be more careful with the 12mm ones on our cars

Re: ARGH! lug nut lock key?

yea hammer a cheap or extra socket on it and use a breaker bar
or use one of the damaged (rounded) bolt head removers on it i have done it both ways on cars and both ways work the damaged (rounded) bolt head removers work the best

and BTW they were not from the factory but a dealer installed option that was really popular since our cars where the highest on the insurance's list of cars stolen

Or if you have a welder handy, tack weld a nut on the end of the locking lug nut. then just remove it with a lug wrench or socket and bar.

Re: ARGH! lug nut lock key?

hmmm i looked in my door jam at the sticker and it has the info on it, but it also reads

"blah blah blah you can get a replacement key by contacting amcor direct with the registration card that was provided at delivery, if that card is lost you can get a request form from your GM dealer and blah blah blah"

but like i said i think it was a GM approved dealer install item, i may be worng it could of been factory on some years or option packages, as far as i can tell my camaro bible mentions nothing of locking lug nuts

here is a pic of the sticker on mine

Like others said, post up a picture, I beleive thee was a few types, of which I have a few of them. Someone might be able to hook you up with the right one so you done have to damage the wheel. Your other choice which I've done inthe middle of a junk yard to my dismay was drill the stud out. Took a while but it can be done.
