Help passing Emissions.. - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

Hi Today my IROC-Z 350 TPI failed emissions testing

The results were:-

Hydro Carbons HC 2.40/1.00 FAIL
Carbon Monoxide CS 14.9/12.00 FAIL
Oxides of NOX 1.81/250 PASS

The air filter is clean, its had a recent oil change (mobil 1 0w30). The ECU is reporting no codes. I also took it for a long drive before testing.

I have an ALDL cable I recorded a session with TunerPRO RT, if that helps?

Can anyone advise on how to get HC & CS down to legal values?

New Magna flow cats and tune it lean lean. Still have the air pump on it?

It still has the air pump, all stock AFAIK. What magnaflow cat models do you recommend? Currently has the dual setup. I really need to keep the cost down if possible..

Did you have the A/C on, it makes a big differince.

Nah, the AC was turned off.

I read that adding alcohol helps, but I don't know what kind to use?

I had similar numbers on my last test but my HCs were up around 4 i think. Prior to even getting this test, I had put in new plugs, cleaned TB, New O2 sensor, new oil, dist cap, rotor, new cat (had a straight pipe before).

I did not have the tools or knowledge for timing adj. I took it to a local shop who did emissions work. $80 diagnostic fee and it was fixed. I believe they fixed a vac leak and adj timing (not sure how much though). They also had the equipment to measure the exhaust and ensure I was going to pass before I left the shop. Best $80 i spent.

I had to use 3 large bottles on 1/2 a tank, drive it around like 1/2 mile or so, then run the test, gas up immediately after to water it down

HC's & CO's being up means to much unburnt fuel is rolling out your tail pipe. Check your timing and change your plugs if they haven't been done in the last year or so.

I used AZ Auto Repair in queen creek on crimson & ocotillo. Might be a little far out of town for you. I used them since they had done quite a few emissions jobs and had a good success rate as shown on the AZ Emissions web page.

Might want to check out http://www.myazcar.com/ and click the locate a repair facility link on the right. It will let you filter by zip and find a shop near you as well as tell you how many repair jobs they have performed in which the Emissions paperwork was completed and turned back in at the testing center.
