Aluminum driveshaft... how much of a difference does it make
Ok so with brennamens GTA in such a predicament he decided to give me his aluminum drive shaft, i understand the logic, less weight, less power to turn it, better mileage/power etc, when i pulled my steel driveshaft out i just about crushed my hand when it popped out of the tranny cuz genius me decided to pull on it and brace the front....but keep my eyes on the back of it, put the new one in and got it all bolted up and ive got to say im really not feelin a difference, any opinions on this?
BTW if anyones looking for a GTA, brennamens got his for sale, freshly built motor by birdtojag, tranny went out so it just needs a 700r4 ( he got screwed over by a shop and is out a trans) we'd rather see it go to a member than to see someone pick it up and tear it apart for a track car or a project thatll never get finished, after all GTA's arent too common these days...

Re: Aluminum driveshaft... how much of a difference does it make
Its more to get rid of some shakes at highway speeds that some people feel. Some people will swear it makes a difference in power and it probably does to some extent. Im not sure anyone has actually done it or not but someone should dyno their car with the steel shaft, then swap in the aluminum one and dyno it again...same day. See what it makes. Im guessing either no change or a 1-2 horse change. The only reason i would put one in is to get rid of the shake at highway speeds that the steel ones have sometimes. Otherwise there are a lot better ways of spending 100 bucks.

$100 for an aluminum driveshaft? Maybe a used one. Summit has them now for $396.95! Dang! Mine cost around $295. about 3 years ago and I thought that was high. It does allow me to go faster without my dash shakin' like a sum bit!
Re: Aluminum driveshaft... how much of a difference does it make
i managed to get mine for free 99 lol honestly i never noticed a shake with my steel one, i do however have a vibration at 3k+ on the rpms, its not the driveshaft obviously because its still persistent after the swap, its not in the tranny because i think after 3 years it would have blown up, the only place i can find it to be would be the pinion, its got alot of slop in it and i just havent gotten around to finding a new LSD carrier for my new gear set, in any case the shaking wasnt really an issue for me, ive just gotta come up with the time and $ to finish eliminating the issues
thanks for the replies

Used LS1 aluminum driveshafts show up on eBay all the time for around $100. There's about a dozen of them on there now in that price range. I've swapped them into 2 of the cars already.
