Yep, expect visual inspections. They pop the hood, and go around the car with a mirror on a stick as if they're looking for drugs. Then you get the idle and 40 mph test.

They even inspect the gas cap.

I worked for the Tucson emissions testing center for one year. you DO NOT have to have anything under the hood except whats required for the air system and gas cap. Other than that, they don't even know what the heck an EGR is I went through the whole training program, trust me I know. Basically, if you have a thirdgen, you'll need this:

3 check valves (one from the cat, one off each manifold)

air tubes from the exhaust manifolds/headers (it only has to be ONE tube off each side, NOT 4 like they install on emissions legal headers)

A diverter with ALL the electrical connections hooked up and ALL the vacuum lines in tact (VERY important, we were paid bonuses for finding cracked vacuum lines off the diverters, which makes the car fail BTW)

and they also check to insure the line from the diverter to the cat is actually hooked up, so be sure its there.

Gas cap pressure.........IF you have an evaporitive canister (an evaporitive canister is NOT required)

Air pump with belt on the pulley, HOWEVER........they do not check to see that it spins. I once ran a buddies car through emissions that had a frozen up pump........we just slapped the belt on right before emissions (a V belt car of course) and watched it melt on the dyno It was neat.

It varies from car to car.......but ALL thirdgens require the exact same emissions equipement in AZ from 82-92. Getting a car to pass the visual is a joke, thats the easy part, passing the loaded CO test is the hard part, they only let us go with 1.20 reading! Thats low.

They don't care if your car was TPI, MPFI, TBI, whatever, you can put a carb on it and they wouldn't know OR CARE what it came stock with anyways. Its got nothing to do with their emissions test so it doesn't matter. Both my firebird and my GF's camaro are former TBI cars.........now carbed.

So if I have a vented gas cap, I can pull the evap canister and pass? I'm really curious to know exactly what I can get away with. I've only been through emissions once when I bought my Iroc last December. My 61 Bug is *way* exempt (and would fail horribly.)

I probably wouldn't pull my EGR just in case. I'd just block it off, but still have the valve there for the visual. Just because it'd be a bitch to put back on if they get picky on me.

I remembered the gas cap because my ex-gf's car failed one year for that reason. I laughed all the way to Autozone.

Trust me dude, they DO NOT check for an EGR. They are 100% absolutely cluesless as to where to even look for it You'd be safe without it. Yeah, my firebird and my camaro got through E test with no evap canister.......however don't throw it away since removing the canister is pushing the limites somewhat since it IS in their training video....but it tells them that if the car has a canister then the gas cap pressure should be checked...it doesn't tell them which cars, exactly, require a pressurized cap and canister. The stuff that they know your car requires is printed on their computer screen when they type in your plate or vin #, it pops up "air system [ ] cat [ ] gas cap [ ]" and they either P or F you in those catagories.

here's how it works. If you have one pipe coming off the y pipe, then you need one cat, if you have two pipes, you need two cats. OR.........if you put one big cat in front of an X pipe, you could get away with one cat on a true duals system. IMHO true duals on a thirdgen is totally ghetto unless you get the crossmember clearanced and bash in your rear seat "humps" to install the mufflers there, but even then your car will bottom out on every speed bump and dip in the road. As for the diverter, its the plastic thing that comes off the air pump that diverts air between the manifolds and the line down to the cat. If you want I could just meet up with you whenever you want to run your car through emissions and tell you exactly what you need to throw on there.
