Straight cut gears

What's so bad about using straight cut gears in a manual tranny on the street, other then noise?

I'm sure after a while the noise won't be so much of a bother

I'll just turn up the stereo.

I'm really considering getting some straight cut dog ring gears for fast shifting.

hah I know this all too well

I too have wondered the same thing dwayne, ive seen straight cut setups without synchros for t5s that supposedly allow clutchless shifting

I am not possitive, but I think that with streight cut gears you need to be REALLY good at shifting with or without a clutch.
The REAL old cars had streight cut gears, thats why they almost always grind when shifting.
You need to be able to match the gear speeds and have the cluster gear and new gear (2nd 3rd or ?) spinning at the same speed.
Knowing you guys it won't matter, as within a few hundred miles the gears will be rounded off anyway. Just remember to change the gear oil to remove the loose gear edges now floating around.

Dwayne, if you're interested:
I have a New Process Chrysler 4 speed trans that is slick shifted and has an adapter to fit a Chevy.

Edit:
Forgot to mention, you won't break it....it's from a HEMI

I talked to some folks who use straight cut gears in their drag cars and the ysaid that you have to slam gears "shift very quickly" or you wear out the dog rings. Ay way your always slammin gears even from stop light to stop light. Not my thing. I saw tremec TKO's on ebay for $1599. I've got the $ now.

Don tell me more about this slick shift.

I've mostly narrowed my choices to the Tremec TKO ($1600 ebay) or the G-force rebuild with true alloy main shaft and bronze forks ($1800) Both claim around the same torque ratings but the g-force is lighter w/bronze forks and super strong main shaft.
