Okay, I FINALLY installed my 1LE front brakes over the weekend including a new master cylinder, new prop. valve, new 5 speed pedal assembly and also completely rebuilt my front suspension/steering and installed my Baer bump steer kit. I ran the car in this morning for an alignment and all seems good. The steering is a little tighter and the handling feels improved.

The brakes seem to be working fine. I had some trouble bleeding the brakes (have I mentioned how much I dislike bleeding brakes?), but all-in-all they feel pretty good. I'll probably bleed them one more time this week just to be sure I have all the air out. The pedal feels a tad soft for my taste, but the car stops fine and even panic stops well.

This now leads to my questions:
1) The brakes performed pretty well thru Topnaga Canyon and PCH on my way to work. However, while backing into my parking space I discovered a "clunk" when I stepped on the brake pedal coming from the right front wheel. It only did this while backing up. I could also feel it. It definitely sounded like something was loose. Kind of like the caliper was moving around in the carrier.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? As I don't have a ton of time in the evenings to work on the car, any input could help pinpoint the problem quicker.

2) My high idle suddenly has reappeared. Specifically, when I come to stop the idle remains at 1k. If I give the accelerator a light tap, then the idle drops to normal.

Again, any ideas/suggestions are welcomed.

#1 Check to make sure the strut bolts are tight. I use a air gun because I couldn't get them tight enough with a torque wrench.

#2 Did you spray all around the outside of the TB? Sometimes a little dirt will get caught up in the springs. Did you check your injectors to see if they are okay? I know my car wasn't running well with 2 injectors at 10 ohms and the rest was 16 ohms. Helped in the gas mileage too.

I'll double-check the suspension tonight. I watched the alignment guy do the work, but it's possible something didn't get tightened down enough.

I did your OHM test a while back and the injectors checked-out fine. I'll inspect the throttle linkage and see if something is going on there. I did install a new accelerator pedal and the throttle cable could be binding somewhere.

For the high idle issues, this is pretty common on our TBs. Mine does it, Mike's does it, and I believe Kevin's does it as well. To fix it I use dry graphite lubricant on the shaft where it goes through the TB at the three locations. It works good until the intake starts sucking up moisture (ram air) when it rains and then I have to re-lube it.

I had the high idle problem in the RS for the longest time. However it finally proved to be the TBI injector caps, though a new IAC also proved to greatly improve the situation. - And on the IROC and SS it helped to take the throttle body apart and clean out all the build up

Please send me some pics of your brake setup when you get a chance, as I am very interested in improving the braking of the IROC.

I already tore down the TB a few weeks back. It helped the problem, but now for some reason after all the work that was done over the weekend the problem is back. I need to go over everything tonight and just double-check connections...etc. It could be a vacuum hose got knocked loose.


I may be pulling the wheels again tonight (oh joy! ) to re-bleed the brakes and check the front suspension (gotta find that clunk). If I do I'll snap some pics.

I meant to do it over the weekend, but I was working late into the night to have the car ready for the alignment shop at 8:00am this morning. By the time I was done, I was too tired (and too dirty) to mess with my camera.

Everything looks really nice right now with all the new shiny and powder coated parts. Once the rotors start to rust, so much for that. The next set I get I'm going to consider having them zinc washed.

Did you "puff" some graphite on the throttle shaft yet?
