I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a powdercoater that can do GTA style wheels here in So. Cal.
Every place I call won't mask the polished rim section. They gotta coat the whole rim. Also, they don't beadblast the rims before coating them either. I have to get that done on my own. WTF?
A member here from the midwest had his GTA wheels powdercoated and the shop did everything. Not only did they mask the polished rim edges, but they beadblasted his wheels as well.
Why can't I find a place here in So. Cal that can do that? Any suggestions?
I'm surprised Olympic Powder-Coating turned you down. You did contact them, right?
It's amazing what some powder-coaters will do. While at a local tire retailer I overheard the conversation between the installer and the customer. The installer was trying to get the key to take off the hubcaps on the customers rims to mount the tires and rims (loose rim, wasn't on the car). On closer inspection they asked the customer if he had the rims powder-coated. Yes. The powder-coater didn't remove the center caps to powder-coat them! The caps were painted to the rim and wouldn't come off!
I spoke with the powder-coater I use in Ontario about coating rims while I was out there picking up parts. I know that he masks the polished parts of the rim. I can't recall if he has a bead blast cabinet though. Regardless, if he does it isn't large enough to bead blast a rim (and neither is mine). He sends any parts that need to be blasted to another place.
You might try Color Code in Gardena (near end of 91 fwy @ 110 fwy). They masked the bearing areas and sandblasted my motorcycle wheels before they powder coated them. Very nice job.
Lon, do you think the coater you use would be able to handle a k-member and a-ams? I figure that they should. Also how many items to they require, or should I take to make the price more reasonable? Thanks
They powder-coat anything up to a full-size Cheby Impala frame (candy purple, yuck). I guess it is the hot ticket at the lowrider hopping contests. No minimums, but the more parts you take them the lower price per-piece. If you're looking to do red or black I could do them with an order of mine. Candy purple and you're on your own.
Yeah, I already contacted Olympic. I don't know if the guy I talked to on the phone was the right person or not, but he really didn't seem to grasp what I wanted done to my wheels. He said that they don't mask the wheels. I'd have to get the entire wheel coated in gold including the rim section.
It was like talking to an Autozone clerk over the phone or something.lol! You know, how you have to fight an uphill battle when you're trying to get the right part sometimes? That's exactly how I felt talking to that guy. Ugh!
Can you tell me the name of the place in Ontario that you use? Maybe I'll give them a call to see what they say. Thanks.
Troy,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give them a call too.
I use a place in Ontario, CA called Alumin-Art for all my powdercoating, anodizing needs. They are very competitivly priced and do excellent work. They also do their own bead blasting so they should be able to help you. About the masking thing.... dunno what they can do, give them a call.

Hey, no problem! Glad that I could be of assistance. I was down there today dropping off some parts to be anodized and I saw a set of wheels down there that they were prepping. I asked if they did masking and they said that it depends on what you want done. If the entire rim has to be prepped for the powdercoat, it would be difficult. Give them a call, or if you are close enough, take a wheel to them and see what they can do. I told them that if they hear from someone wanting some work done on Firebird rims that I reffered them, and to give you a little price break, they said no problem, talk to Issac, he is who I talked to today.

Doing well thank you for asking, I don't know if you are interested but you should check out something that a couple of us have been working on lately at Jenibella Racing 's Message Board Love to have your involvement

Hey Jason, glad to see you posting on TGO. How are the used Camaro seats I sold you 2 years ago working out for you? I sent you another e-mail invoice and reminder about the $40 you still owe me for them, but didn't get a reply. I know you e-mailed me that you'd pay for them by the end of July, but that was over 13 months ago. Any idea how soon I can expect payment?
