Went to smog Kevin

After you did that tuning Kevin I felt good about going over to smog. The car seems to be running well enough.

Well I failed again. This time I passed the Co at 0.45 at 15 and 0.52 at 25, max is 0.71 and 0.58 at 25.

I failed the Hc at max 108 meas 171 at 15, max 83 meas 100 at 25.
The smog tech says I should take it to this Mikes auto repair that knows these engines and has a roller there for smog. I was like ok I'll go check him out, if he can get it passed smog. Then on the other hand Im thinking I dont think so. What can he do that we cant. Then who knows how much he would be charging. So that's where Im at. I talked with Ivan he says replace the cats that should do it possibly, the smog tech said the cats could be it also, much as he knows he is not sure. So what do you think? Should I replace the cats. The tuning seems to be there so not sure if you think checking on that again would be the ticket to passing.

Re: Went to smog Kevin

Are you running the "pass smog test" additive in your fuel? It is available in most auto parts stores under fuel additives. it says to run additive out of the tank then refill to take the test, but running the test with the additive in place would be illegal, hint hint.

It's gotten everything that was even close the first time past the sniffers. Replacing the cats would probably do it, too.

Good luck.

Yah, what Troy said. Did you try the smog-check additive before you went over there? The tuning is right on, Branden, so you have something else wrong, like the cats have failed. Do you know how old the cat is? If its been since the engine was installed, then its probably failed. They dont like being too rich or too lean.

Re: Went to smog Kevin

Kevin suggested that additive yesterday also. I felt so
confident that it was going to pass, that I just went to the smog shop. I asked the person would it work for me and he said no. We have heard people passing with it however.

Yeah the cats are as old as when the engine was built. I read up on these cats and seems even Kevin has had some problems with these type, and a few others. We know the car has run rich and also a tad lean probably then the to high of octane that there probably needing replaced. A few weeks ago lil chunks of black flake was coming out the tail pipe, not sure what it's from but I take it that it could be from the cats maybe?

I asked Don how much will it cost to replace them seems that will be the direction.

Yeah I seen that, not much at all. Hopefully the next set will last longer than 2 years.
