I got a offer for my car last night of 2500 so I think I am going to take it. I've heard you have to smog a car in california prior to selling it .... Is there any truth to this? I am only concerned because mine had an engine swap, it can pass a siffer test with ease but would it be best to have it referee'd prior to sale to keep it from haunting me later?
Okay so if it passes even though it hasn't been inspected by a ref. that will do and if it does come back to haunt me just say they had to have changed the motor LOL
Avoid referees at all costs, they will crawl over the thing with a magnafiying glass looking for ???
If you take it to an average joe and get a passing certificate, you're good to go. Nobody looks for "non-stock" engines unless they have a reason to. Don't give them a reason.
In CA it is the sellers responsibility to smog the car before sale.
Not quite true, it's the responsibility of the seller that it will pass. The seller does not have to do it. And, it is negotiable. (as is type of sale)
What sort of engine swap did you do? If you swapped a 350 in place of a 305 and kept the smog equipment stock, you can probably take it to any smog test station and get a certificate.

The DMV cant and wont. The paperwork is incomplete until the smog certificate is issued, then and only then will they issue a title and registration of any sort. Thats if a smog is required on the vehicle.
I got the title issued on my IROC without a smog check and got it put on non-op properly as it should have been prior to me getting it. But it was a hassle. DMV lost the paperwork between here and Sacramento, so the gal in Sacramento kindly transferred title for me to apolgize for the error.
Maybe because you requested a non-op. They will not do it on any car thats going to be driven. I've spoken with enough people there enough times to find that much out. I have to have the smog cert in their hand before they will process any of the registration information they already have in hand. I dont even know what my status is at this point, aside of that they should have everything they need and I dont have a single thing I need aside of a sticker on my windshield. I'm just going to assume that thing is valid indefinitely and let them sort it out.
when i got my camaro, it was a salvaged vehical, so i had to get a VIN inspection, brake & light check, test only... all of wich was the sellers responsability..
