My a/c is slightly less cold than it used to be and I'd like to top it off before it gets really hot. Has anyone driven down to Mexico for r12? Is it super expensive there too? I go to Ensenada all the time (never in my Firebird, and never sober ), so a trip to EL NAPA wouldn't be too far of a stretch. I'm not crazy about driving my thirdgen around Mexico, but I'm also not crazy about huge fines if I get caught smuggling r12 back to the US, so I'd probably buy the refrigerant and top it off there.
Freeze 12 has the same boiling point as R-12 and you'll get the same result. No need for changing the oil in the refrigerant system, either. You can get it at any reputable auto parts place but you'll need a license or a buddy that has it to buy it for you. Reason for the license is so that the gov't can make sure mechanics follow proper recover procedures of old R-12.
In any case, there are alternatives and it's about $12 for each 12 oz can.
Yeah, I've been reading up on Freeze12 but I think I'll rest a little easier with actual r12, especially since I only have to drive a couple hours to Mexico get it...plus that's another excuse to eat fish tacos and go to Papas and Beer
Hey, that might be a cool idea for a Socal cruise--SD to Ensenada maybe? We'd have the nicest cars in all of Mexico!

Hahaha, no offense bro. I'm a typical California honky, but my pop's side of the family is from Mexico. Where do you live? Thanks for the info!
no problem man, currently i live in guadalajara, but i have lived all over mexico and also in the states but i like it better here
Holla amigo, would you be willing to ship R-12 if you can get it, I need some

ummmmm I think it could be just a little illegal shipping it here LOL
I would have to say diddo
You guys better send it to a PO Box, send it to your job under a some eleses name or send it to your neighbor thats never home and sign for the package if it makes it or play dump when the feds come get him.
I would hate to have to sit in Prison for trafficing freon
By the way using the mail system to comit a crime is a federal offense. It would be less of a crime if you met him at the fence and he toss a couple of cans over the fence for you, preferably not next to the main crossing . But if you guys start a freon smugling ring get a couple cans for me cause my ac been blowing luke warm air since 2002

Ok, first of all what you're discussing (smuggling freon across the border) is highly illegal, so it cannot be discussed on thirdgen.org.
Second, this is an English board, so please keep your conversations in English for everyone's benefit. You can talk whatever language you want in PM's.
Third, I'm -><- this close to locking this thread anyway....

I agree with both of you. I'm Cuban, and speak fluent Spanish and speak only Spanish at home, but when you are on this forum it is a good idea to maintain discourse in a language ALL the members can understand, not just a select few.
I still haven't a clue as to why you knuckle heads just won't use Freeze-12. It has nearly identical properties as R-12 and it's easier to get than R-12. I have used it for years now to all of my Pre-1992 cars and it works great!
Que tontos de veras! Really, How dumb can you be?
Just discussing the plans to transport contraband are grounds to get arrested! It's a federal crime!

Well, I still think that since Mexico is so close, I might as well just head down and fill up on r12 there. I brought back fireworks and stuff when I was a kid, but it's just too dangerous now. I started this thread and I'm kinda bummed it took such a nose-dive.
Well, there's nothing illegal about driving to Mexico. There's also nothing illegal about fixing your car there. So if you go down there to fill up your AC system, you havent broken any laws, you've just saved some money.
Yea, this thread is super GAY. Why the heck are so many of yall afraid to convert to 134? I did it in my car, QUITE EASY & works great still. Haven't touched the AC system since June of '06...

Joe Mama!
I don't need to convert because my r12 system isn't leaking or broken and I'm not crazy about dropping $800 to convert. Kill the rainforest! Use r12!
It didnt cost me 800 to convert... Only cost me about 80 plus the 134... but I had to buy a new compressor (cuz mine was leaking), and now my Accumulator is leaking too... but the actually conversion was surprisingly cheap

well yea under those conditions you are goin to want ac regardless on the color
hey im actually goin to guadalajara mexico going to leave wedsday nite o thursday morning see when flights are available ill check out the r-12 situation over there jk lol so if i see a nice thirdgen it might be mexicannights cus i dont rember seeing any last time i went but it was like 7 years ago lol

I daily drive mine, and not only does the AC not work, but the passanger window motor is dead. Mine is a black on black hardtop and with only 1 window down it can get plenty hot... Especially during the summer when it gets 90-100+ and it is humid...
Man, i need a new accumulater so I can finally recharge my AC with 134
If you meant, where you get the Freeze 12? Then you can get it at any checker, shucks, cragen or pepboys, or autozone. BUT YES you will need a license or a buddy that has it. A nice mechanic that has an ASE license in HVAC can get for you, too. Also, anyone who works in servicing HVAC systems has a certification to get refrigerants and can also get for you.
Last set of cans I bought were 10.99 a can and that was 2 years ago, So, it may have gone up a buck or two.

Good question. I have a set of hoses for R-12 for many years now. So, I haven't had the need to buy new ones. You might be able to get them at a commercial refrigeration supply store. I have a buddy who was able to get some adapters to use the on older cars and he has new R134 hoses. The adapters are hoses also that have R134 on one side and R12 on the other. I don't get out much to service cars anymore. Just my own. I am now a civilian electronics tech. I gave up the being a navy jet mechanic a couple of years ago. That's when I would work on cars on the side to make extra cash. I have also seen a recharge hose that puntures the cans from the side for both R134 and R-12.
