Black out light covers are not legal for headlights; I'm not sure about taillight/brakelights. I don't have a clue what H.i.ds are.

Technically any modification of the lighting system is illegal.

Best bet would be to search the Ca vehicle code as they made some changes for the projector lights.

ive had blackout tail light covers for 2 years on my camaro with no problems w/ cops. plus they look better 2,lol. As 4 h.i.d's. i'd say put'em on if u want them. just do go and blind i cop from behind or anything. its not that big of deal to change 'em back.

Re: Question are blackout light covers&h.i.ds legal in ca

Ive had HIDs on my car for some 3-4 years(xenarcs) & have never had any issues with the popo.I also have HIDs on both my bikes & also no problemos the lawman. As for blackout tailights.I never cared for those GT lense covers, so i sprayed mine with VHT nightshades wayyy back in 1991.I've gone thru two tailights(1st cracked). The first set was really dark, 2nd about 2/3rd as dark.Currently i have a checkered pattern on my tailights(3rd set). Not as dark as the two previous sets, but in all those years .Only once was i pulled over for my tailights & the cop told my lights were a little dim(warning only). So i installed some 1157 silvetstars & problem solved.

Blackouts on the headlights and taillights are definitely illegal. You can have the clear covers over them though.

I dont know about HID's.

HIDs are technically not legal. The only HID system that is DOT approved are sylvanias xenarcs, but even that doesnt make them 100% legal.

I find that if your not doing illegal actions (speeding, running a stop sign, burn-out on private property) that the cops are not going to mess with you about stuff like that but you get pulled over for speeding or the above they are known to add that little stuff on. So just don't do anything stupid near a cop and use the covers not the nightshade so that you can take it off and only get a warning.

Re: Question are blackout light covers&h.i.ds legal in ca

tinted headlight and tail lights covers are not legal. the tail lights don't really matter since they the red light still shines through them pretty easy so you will have no problem there. The problem will be the headlights on my camaro they dimmed the mess out of my lights that if I turned off my fog lights I couldn't really see. I was pulled over once by the CHP cause he saw me coming down the freeway with really dim lights. But all he did was go look at them and then he came back and told me I need to wash the covers since it was night time he had no idea they was tinted he thought they was clear but dirty. So if you want to do it just do it if u get pulled over they just pull right off. But be warned don't drive in low light areas at night like lancaster or fontana if there is no city lights you will not be able to see.
