Guys I used to be part of this board but can't remember my old login info. I used to work for Super Chevy Magazine until a few weeks ago when I got laid off. At the time of my layoff I had literally stripped my 88 IrocZ down to a rolling shell, it was getting ready for a full custom repaint, shaved the door handles, pulled the engine and trans (new Tune port Stroker, 4L60 trans), New Moser rear end, was going to update the car with 92 Camaro trim, 99-2000, seats etc. The list goes on.
Then I got laid off and was stuck with a shell of a car and the magazine had no interest in finishing the build. So I had to pull all the good parts off and sell them or give them to friends. Then the sad part comes. I had to cut up the car
and throw it in the dumpster. I could not just keep the car at my buddies shop and my home garage is filled with my other project cars. I still have parts and other stuff if any one is looking for stuff.
...I used to work for Super Chevy Magazine until a few weeks ago when I got laid off....
Sadly, you've summed-up the decline of the magazine and newspaper print industry that has been ongoing since the 1980's and is accelerating with the present economic debacle. At that time I was a full-time photojournalist traveling worldwide for print publications, but jumped into mass communications where jobs have more stability.
It is especially disappointing when a fellow journalist and Camaro enthusiast is caught between the jaws of misfortune. And for anyone still working in the print news business, they just have to know it will get worse, lots worse.
I hope you're able to get back into another car-related publication and continue with a ThirdGen Camaro build someday.
You hit the nail right on the head. The magazine and print media are circling the drain right now. The corporate *******s of sourceinterlink that own nearly all the automotive magazines are doing their best to make the magazines extinct. They raise the price of the mags by a dollar each, and print the mags on shitty paper that is just one grade above toilet paper, they cater to the advertisers rather than the readers, they all dismiss the internet as a fad etc. They don't look at the magazines in the long term view, it is all about turning quarterly profits and making the CEO's and VP's of the company richer. Everything is ad sales driven and ad dollars driven. Editorial content is just the **** that fits in between the ads.
While on the staff of Super Chevy, I was always pushing for 3rd gen Camaro stuff. Just recently my former boss, the editor and chief told me "nobody cares about those cars but you". What a jerk.
The 3rd gen Camaro is one of Chevrolets best handling cars off the lot. A few modest upgrades and it can out handle a C-5 or C-6 Vette. Which is what I had planned for my Iroc. Man it was going to be such a kick *** Camaro.
The thing that kills me is back in 1990 I sold my 73 Camaro for 400 bucks just to get rid of it. Now those things are worth easily 15k! I just know in 10 years or less that my Iroc will be worth money and I will feel just as sad about getting rid of it as I do my 73.

Believe it or not, the guy that runs the Super Chevy web site, not only is tech geek, but a car geek like the rest of us. That is his car he is working on.
The only mags that will touch anything 3rd Gen related is Camaro Performers and Chevy High Performance.
I'll get another 3rd gen some year. I remember back in 1991 when I was 19 years old, I qualified for a loan to buy a 90 RS red T-top car. Oh man I was in love! But the insurance payments for a 19 year old kid to own a year old Camaro exceed the monthly car payments! Im 37 now, maybe in my late 40's when I go through my mid life crisis, I'll get my Red 1990 Camaro and rip up the roads in the Silver State challenge or Bonneville.
so is that camaro in the pop this story in the "APRIL 2009" Super Chevy, about shaving door handles...thats your car? i read that the other day and was thinkin man it be nice to get that guy on TGO maybe he could drum up some more third gen coverage in the mag.... that sucks dude....

Yeah man, that WAS my car. Im actually kind of pissed over the whole affair. I tore my car apart based on the promises of rebuilding it in the magazines. I had just put in new Autometer gauges, shaved the door handles, filled in the side marker lights on the front fenders, went and collected 92 Camaro aero side trim. I took three weeks of vacation at the end of Dec and beggining in January and worked on the Camaro 8 hours a day, sanding the door jambs and priming for paint, getting it ready to do those stories. I come back from vacation and get laid off two weeks later. That Camaro was my daily driver, my only driver. It would have cost me thousands of dollars to get it all back together again, and without a job that was not an option.

I saw that article too... That is definetley a kick in the balls to do to someone. Sorry about what happened.
Where in So Cal are you located. I am currently looking for a front bumper and headlight panel for my 91. I also need a drivers side door if anyone had one they don't need my camaro got backed into.
I may remember meeting you at a Tuesday night meet at Fuddruckers in El Toro/Lake Forest in 1999-2000. I believe you were working on a Third Gen/GM crate engine project at the time. You asked me to send you some pictures of my 1C5 California IROC-Z. I remember sending you a small portfolio of pic's, info, and a hand full of 11 sec timeslips. Anyway, never seemed to make it to print.
So very sorry to hear of your losses. Hope you can recoup something from all the equipment you're selling.
Good luck,
Sincerely,
Dave Sauro
I’ll tell you straight; this was a difficult post to read. I’ve had four third gens since the age of eighteen and can honestly say that I have loved each and every one of them. My current project (89 RS) recently went from a custom car cover holder that was driven once every two months to our club meeting s to daily driver about five months ago. I’m not going to lie to you, the transition wasn’t easy having had full size SUV’s as daily drivers for the past ten years. Within less than a week, if given the option I wouldn’t have driven anything else. There is something to me said for the primitive feel of these cars. The cracks and rattles of the plastics, the wind noise at speed, and the sharp body lines that blatantly disrespect the egg shaped vehicles of today. The only down side is that they don’t pull *** like they did back late eighties and early nineties. However I have found that if you actually take them for a ride, they’ll come out of that passenger seat and onto your lap quicker than you get asked to hold her panties so she doesn’t forget them. Hey, it can only get better from here out. I wish you well and please know that you are amongst friends here…
... Just recently my former boss, the editor and chief told me "nobody cares about those cars but you".
Most of us have migrated over to this site because we were not being served by the magazines. I have done some editorial projects on third-gens for Scourge Interlink, and it's hard to sell a third-gen project to the editors because THEY have all failed miserably at them, so the CARS must suck. Much of the aftermarket products for these cars are lame because they are designed to work on the stock TPI system, which is designed for torque at the expense of top end power. Any dork can bolt a few parts onto an LS1 car and be an instant hero, so that is what they want. Besides, I've posted up about articles in current magazines, and nobody here wants to buy them, they just want it posted for free.
I live in Chino. If you need the front bumper/nose piece and headlight surrounds. You can have em for free. Im just glad somebody can use them. PM and we'll meet up sometime this week.

Mike that completely stinks about your situation. Are you still with Camaro Performers or no? I tried to email you a couple weeks ago and didnt hear anything back, now I know why.
By the way, 165cc heads on a 383?? You need at least 190cc heads. And you can go much bigger than that cam for a 383. Just so you have something for your future thirdgen.
Yeah Kevin, that would be why i didnt e-mail you back. No, Im not with Any magazines anymore. I figure I will freelance and see where that takes me.
About the engine. I was scared of the smog nazis in this state. I wanted to keep this engine 100% street/smog legal, what with mobile inspection stations and exhaust sniffers on the side of the freeway and cameras taking pictures of the cars that drive through the sniffers etc etc. This state scares the hell out of me, they (the politicians) seem to hate hot rodders and anyone who doesn't want to drive a damned Prius!
The heads and cam all have carb EO numbers so that way no smog station idiot can dispute the parts.
I once had some jackass lift the hood on my car (at a smog station) and try to go over my engine with a fine tooth comb etc. I know the engine could wring out more numbers with a bigger can and better flowing heads, maybe the next owner will want to change that.
The Hp on the engine peaks out at 340HP @ 4800 prm and the torque peaks at 462 at 3400 rpm. It should be a great engine for doing bunouts and a snappy throttle response.
For all the guys that have PM'd me, I will take pictures of everything this week and post it up here for you.

Nope wasn't me. I've never been to Fuddruckers. The name just scares me.

No wonder I've been getting all of these subscription deals for mags, I knew newspapers were doing poorly so I guess I'm not too suprised about car mags as well. Still sucks about your Camaro. That had to be a major kick in the Butt. Not only lose your job but lose your ride too!! Hang in there. Something good will come out in the end. Have to agree with other members that third-gen coverage in most mags is non-existant. Why? You can't beat the bang for the buck. Just look at the number of members at this site.
I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. What a backbreaker to wreck a perfectly good third gen for nothing. What really makes me mad is that I just got a 2 year subscription to Super Chevy and the first two issues arrived last week. After reading through them, I wasn't too impressed, but now I'm p*ssed that I gave money to people who screwed you over.
Yeah sure, I'll sell the steering wheel, I had no plans for it. PM me.
Oh and Kevin, WHY didn't you tell me about those Trick Flow heads! Doh. If I could have any set of heads I would choose AFR. They rule.
I'm sorry to hear of your situation. I hope the free lancing works out or that you find another writing gig.
I think the AFR 195's are also smog legal. About 3 years ago I subscribed on line to a car mag called Winding Road. The editor was David E Davis (since retired again), he used to edit Car & Driver and later started Automobile Mag. The subscription was free. As they explaind it, the subscription and news stand prices on print mags only cover printing and distribution costs. If you can offer the same thing on line with out printing and mailing or distribution costs, you can offer it for free to the consumer and just require an e-mail address from subscribers to make a list to show potential advertisers the size of the readership. They now also offer the mag in a pdf format without advertising for a fee, but if you don't mind ignoring the advertising, the mag costs the consumer nothing. Winding road is only about stock vehicles, like Automobile, Car & Driver, Motor Trend, Road & Track, etc. Maybe someday publishers like your former employer will realize that the internet is not some sort of passing fad. It is also not being utilized effectively as long as they think they can sell subscriptions and news stand copies and only offer a little extra fluff on the net. One advantage of the online mag is that they can run a car around the Nurburgring or Le Mans, or any other road or track and offer video clips of the lap. How many movies do the car mags include in each issue? I hope somebody shows an interest in publishing an online hot rod type mag where they actually modify cars rather than just road testing stockers.
hey california guys i gotta question. im not tryin to be rude and im not sayin california sucks, but why do you guys live there? i couldnt stand being eyed everytime i drove. i couldnt stand people bitching about my smog crap. why not just move away? everytime i see people that are from cali they all say how much they hate smog control stuff. i wouldnt be able to live there.

I (as well as others, I'm sure) don't mind having & keeping emissions equipment at all. My car passes the inspections rather easily, and performs well.
Bill

The climate can't be beaten. I lived in upstate N.Y. for a couple of years in the early 1970's. I don't mind snow on the mountains that I can go visit if I want to play in it, but I don't want the stuff in my neighborhood EVER!!! I don't EVER want to live in a place where the government salts down roads to rot my car. I could move out of California to some other area in the Southwest, but my grand kids live less than a mile away, and momma ain't movin away from her grand kids! If you keep a car smogged correctly, there is really no problem. People on this board have proven that you can get performance out of theses cars and still be smog legal. Finally, for all of you guys out of Cali who think you are immune to smog regs because you live in another state. If your air quality starts going down, you will probably discover that your state will start copying Cali. Many states that didn't have tough smog enforcement rules 10 years ago are cracking down on pollution now. It won't get better.
i can understand all that for sure. i hate illinois. very badly. cold cold cold winters. snows from november to march. i think ill move to georgia or somthin. but anyway back on topic!!
Sorry to hear about you losing your job especially when times are hard....wish you the best.
What kind Bilstein struts/shocks do you have (HD or Sports)...and how much are you asking for them?

that really sucks bad. alot of the mags have been getting crappy lately and its terrible to hear about your loss. I know this may hurt to answer but do you still have the fenders and aero kit? i was thinking of filling the side markers myself.
Yeah I have the fenders. But Like I said I filled in the marker lights already. I'll post a picture real soon. You can have em for free if you need em'. Just got back from working at the shop. Im pooped and need a bath.
I met JERRYWHO today. Sold him some stuff and gave him the aero stuff, so the aero stuff is gone.

You never asked? I'm a phone call or email away. I'm not sure if the AFR's have an EO# but they will pass smog with no problems. They just did with Pat's combo in Don's car.

We hate being controlled and told what to do, but the fact remains the smog devices we have do clean up the air. However, now the state is overdoing it to the point its driving business out of the state. Those that say the smog devices are crap either remember the early 70's or were taught by someone who does. Those first "band-aid" emissions devices are crap and do hurt more than they help. Today's devices are barely intrusive and only look ugly. They dont interfere with horsepower. That said, we have several smog-legal and clean combos in thirdgens in our club that will beat the pants off combos from other states that are "dirty" and wont pass the sniffer. Its all a matter of being smart and choosing the right components. And yes sometimes it costs a little more money, but its worth it to have a clean-emissions car that you can drive every day and still get 20+ MPG.
JERRYWHO already went home withthe 91-92 Aero sides. But the Nose piece and the rest of the 88 Iroc ground effects side stuff and rear hatchback spoilers are here for the taking.
Free Glass back:
Free 91-92 Nose Piece:
Free right and left fenders, but I have already filled in the side marker lights:
and free hood hinges, but the struts dont strut anymore
why not start you own little third gen magazine..you have the know how and the people you have met over the years.. i'm sure there are people who would like to see it..

Ugh. One less thirdgen to conserve and admire amongst the endless sea of imports and stangs. One less glimpse into the american muscle of the 80s. I'm very sorry for your loss. *puts hat on chest*
But like snowman said, maybe it's time some people step up and get a thirdgen publication into gear. I can't say it'll draw gobs of readers, but it will have a base following and a loyal one.

Starting my own magazine would be an adventure of the most stomach acid proportions. A couple of years back when they fired the old editor of Super Chevy magazine, they took 3 months to find another editor. During those three months I was the guy that ran the magazine. And I spent 12-15 hours a day in the office trying to put of fires of every different sort, then try to shoot features, stories and write them...I seriously developed stress chest pains. of course I had a staff of only one and a half people. Im just not that dynamic a person to pull something like that off. Besides I prefer to get my hands dirty part time and then write about it part time rather than sit behind a computer for 10 hours a day.
