does anyone have an extra tpi small cap remote coil distributor laying around I'm having a problem with the timing advances 10 more degrees when I rev the engine with the timing setting wire disconnected which it should not do. It is causing problems with my megasquirt. I'm just trying to rule out the distributor and hopefully figure out what is causing this.

Did you check your timing chain slack yet? I had a random 15 degree +/- even when disconnected from computer command. It is easier to check than even replacing the distributor. Remove the dist cap, and mark rotor loaction. Turn the engine by hand and monitor how many degrees the crank is turned before the rotor moves. Go both directions. I replaced my distributor for the same reason, and it did not help. The cam gears are coated in plastic and it will wear off causing excess slack.
*edit* I guess this likely wouldn't apply to you considering you built your 383, and likely did not install a factory timing chain set.
GOOD LUCK ANYWAYS!!
Ok can someone with a small cap distributor verify this for me just check the timing with the bypass pin unplugged then watch the timing while revving the timing to like 2500 to see if it advances beyond the initial setting? And let me know the results?
Hey Marc, I can probably help you w/ that, the only catch is that I'm thinking that Thursday is probably the earliest I could do it... If that's OK, let me know.
