i found a pair of bilstein shocks on a car in a yard that looks decent, so should get some used bilsteins or just buy new kyb for the rear? which is better?

It depends what KYB shocks you would go with. IMO KYB is better than Bilstein. I would probably just get new ones anyway. You don't know how much they were used or how long they have been sitting on there. My .2
the reason i ask such a question is that i have always heard bilstein are that much better then kyb, at least the gr2's. so i could get lucky and get decent used bisteins that will be better then the new kyb's for less money.

You have no way of knowing the shocks are any good though until they are mounted up or tested.

well, the bilstein have a lifetime warranty....hmmmm......maybe you could send them in and either get rebuilt or a new set???? don't know if you'd have to provide a receipt or not. worth the try! does the car have bilstein struts also??? the rear shocks are only 79.95 thru classic industries. however the struts are like 269.00

i figure if i can get them for a bucks, might get lucky and get some decent shocks cheap. is there an easy way to test these shock off the car to see if there there worth it? also do bistein shocks last longer them most shock or do they last 40,000-50,000 just like any other shocks?
If you're just using to car as a daily driver/weekend cruiser, than Bilsteins & KYBs will be fine. If you do any autox or do track lapping with it, save your money and get some real shocks like Koni Yellows. KYBs are good for 2000 lbs ricers, not 3300 lbs FBods. Bilstein would be my 2nd choice after Konis for some mild competition.

What I did was bought some used front bilstein struts and after about 3 years of driving on them, got them rebuilt for half the price of new ones. Total price including initial buy price was $200 and new they are $300.
For comparison, new Bilsteins at Autozone are $89.99 each for the rear shocks and $179.99 each for the front struts, as of 3 weeks ago when I bought mine.
just an update, i installed the used bilsteins, i compared the monroe shocks that were on the car, they looked pretty new, but i dont know for sure, but the bilsteins felt harder to compress and faster to expand, most importantly i did feel a difference, well worth $20 bucks
bilsteins will be yellow and have a blue bilstein sticker, all of the above could come with bilsteins, but most didnt, also you can use 93-02 bilsteins also
