just got a quick ratio gear box off ebay, is there any way to tell if it's good without bolting it on?
the engine is not in the car yet.

They don't "go bad" much, except by leaking, and needing adjustment.
Leaking should be somewhat obvious. I don't think you need help with that.
To adjust it, you back off on the lock nut and Allen in the top cover; back off the great big sheet metal lock nut on the worm shaft adjuster, and adjust that until it takes about 2 inch-pounds IIRC (it's been a while since I did one, so I forget the exact #s) to turn the shaft; then tighten the Allen thing until it takes about 4 inch-pounds or so to turn it. Your service manual will give you the right torque values, don't trust mine, they're just for illustration.
