Those with AGR Steering Box

I've searched but would like more info. In your opinion is the following AGR steering box as good or better than the IROC box? Is there a better option?

Doesn't Flaming River offer boxes as well?

Re: Those with AGR Steering Box

If i needed a box I would go to Lee in California. Not sure if the number is still the same:

Lee Manufacturing (818)768-0371

If anything a net search should bring them up.

They will set the box up for turn ratio, stops, and road feel (torsion bar torque value). To your liking.

Re: Those with AGR Steering Box

This is the only info that I was ever able to find (I don't know if what follows is current or not):

Lee Manufacturing Company
11661 Pendleton St, Sun Valley, CA 91352-2502, United States
Phone: (818) 768-0371

At any rate, I'm still hoping for some AGR info.

No experiance on the AGR but have not heard good things about them. My steering box developed a leak so I ordered the ACDelco unit today. Its the performance FE2/F41 box 2.5 turns lock to lock. I found it for $165.88 shipped from rms auto with no core charge. Heres the Link if your interested.

I was just about to make a thread about that AC/Delco box. I wasn't sure if it was the quick ratio or not. I can get it for $114 after the core return through work, so since y'all are saying it is the quick ratio box, I'll go ahead and order it tomarrow.

The Z is meaningless. It is only an ID for the raw casting. Anything can be on the inside. Those castings were used on everything from the highly desired HX box to Gran-Ma's Buick.

Yeah, I saw that after I got my stock box out. I have never seen a regular stock box before, until I took mine out.

So far I'm happy with my Delco box, there is no play in it and the car turns a lot better than it did with the 3 turn standard box. The steering feels "lighter" (easier to turn the wheel), but I'm not sure if that is the box itself or because my ball joints on the control arms are getting close to needing replacement.

Re: Those with AGR Steering Box

About 4 years ago I put a AGR pump and gearbox on a cj5 rock crawler , the pump was just a brand new saginaw (?) pump they had modified to increase flow .
AGR offered 2 gearbox options for the cj , a standard and quick ratio , the guys at AGR reccomended the standard ratio for the cj because of the lift and big tires . The cj guy goes to colorado , moab , arkansas , oklahoma and new mexico throughout the summer and not one problem .
He told me the jeep was caught in a rut on its side and he could effortlessly turn the wheel and the tires would push the nose up off the ground , the cj had a big block in it , I've lost touch with the owner but from my experience AGR builds nice stuff .

Whats the P/N for the quick ratio on rockauto? Is it the 2.25 turns to lock?

I thought the quick ratio was 2.25 to lock, is the 2.5 not standard?
It says 2.0-2.5 to lock on the website there for that box..

Re: Those with AGR Steering Box

haven't used AGR before but i installed a Lee Performance 670 unit (smaller, lighter weight, better valving like rack n pinion)... I'll say NO it does not feel like a rack n pinion but it is 'close'.. It is definitely better than my stocker IROC box in terms of road feel and smoothness. I think my rag joint is finished so im installing a new steering shaft with a solid u-joint instead of a rag joint so then i will be able to feel the box's full potential.

Re: Those with AGR Steering Box

I used an AGR box in my old Camaro and it sucked. It felt used and had a tight feel to it from the get go - it never "broke in" and got free like the standard box feel. I had extensive work done to this car including a complete flaming river double u-joints shaft so it was definately the box that sucked.

I have used 2 boxes in different vehicles from Lee Performance and they are great.

ps- This is Dean (Vetruck). I am on a friends computer.

ahhh hey dean. I was wondering for a sec who had similar specs to your old car lol. the flaming river double ujoints shaft sounded like yours haha.

I saw on Racecraft's site a steering shaft with double u-joints, do you know if that would work well with the Lee 670 box?

Thnx!

Jerrywho has a 600 series box in his Camaro. I have not driven it but I have witnessed both Jerry and Mike (Greygoose) one hand the car around a "Time Attack" road course.

Word of Caution, Sadly Tom Lee had a stroke recently but is still working in the office. He is slipping badly with memory loss and making lots of errors. If you order anything, make sure not to deal with him, ask for his wife Gale. I feel bad posting this but I had a very difficult time with them last time I recently delt with them that it took about 8 phone calls and a return to get everything correct. I reallyu think she needs to not have him answering phones anymore- My team owner had to dispute a problem to his credit card company and that was the first Gale knew about it- she quickly corrected it, but it was a hassle none the less.

Re: Those with AGR Steering Box

Interesting.. I got the Lee box from SC&C so it was not direct, and there was a big wait, about 2 and a half months, but it ended arriving and works like a charm.. Alot harder to steer though, but it's spec'd for a stock IROC pump but the road feel is very accurate compared to the stock iroc box i had before..

On another note, I am ordering that Racecraft Sportsman Steering Shaft Kit (228$). I was going to install a solid joint in the place of the rag joint but the whole kit looks more appealing to me, everything new and fresh. Do you know if this piece is a good investment and a direct fit with the 670 box?

EDIT: Here's the link: http://www.racecraft.com/index.php?m...roducts_id=952

That shaft does NOT look like it is telescopic. It looks fixed length. I do not like the idea of putting a shaft onto the car that is rigid in length, too much chassis flex can eventually break it.

I also do not know if the 670 box is the same length as the 800 series box in the snout position. I know the 670 box is smaller overall, but the shaft mount position MAY be identical and I would bet it most likely is.(But I have been know to be wrong in my assumptions)

Re: Those with AGR Steering Box

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but what is a 'telescopic' steering shaft? Also, is this a race only shaft, because I will be using the car mostly for street use so I have to consider that as well... Which flaming river shaft did you buy for your car?
