3rd gen torque arm?

I don't about you guy's and gal's the hole torque arm thing just seem like an engineering after thought or factory rig to keep the diff in place I think the whole idea is crap I just installed a 9 inch I my z28 and could not bring my self to build or buy the torque arm rig for it, so I have developed triangulated or 3 link set up for so I can remove the center section without having to take all torque adapter apart, plus I can adjust my diff angle will post pictures when It's done

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

A torque arm setup is actually a very effective way to transfer the vehicle lifting force to the cg of the car, without lot of a low body line

Your 3-link design must be really short & even the shortest adjustment equals a great deal of effective adjustment to it.

Some might consider that a benefit thought, since the adjustment end doesn't need a tall range of room to fit in & be able to adjust.

Different schools of thought on both methods, I'm sure.

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

Thanks for the reply, what's funny I always been the first guy to scream don't reinvent the wheel for sure, If I built the 10 bolt (weak p.o.s) I would have built a tube torque arm or at least plated the other side of the stamped torque arm to cut down on the flex, get rid of the rubber and go with the polyurethane or solid, what I don't like it is how it is used as lever arm (no pivot or ridgid at the diff) which works, but I want the energy to stay at the other end. I don't know maybe It it's a gm unibody thing? my top link mount(cross member like) is half the distance between the pinion and the tail shaft of the tranny (welded at the fwd end of the rear subframe) with the link bar running from the top of 9 inch housing down the tunnel to three hole adjustable mount the link bar is gonna be about 28" to 30" roughly, I will fab the link bar tommrow. my cross member like torque arm mount will be intagrted into my subframe connector's as well, and a even mount for the driveshaft loop.

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

like stephen said, the torque arm is a really good setup that works well for straight line as well as cornering, which cant be said about 4 links and other setups.

However, the stock parts are rather pathetic and the aftermarket has some really good upgrades that will eliminate the non adjust ability issues and flex.

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

hello 86ta I disagree the 4 link is way better than camaro torque arm because the are way stronger, less flex, the don't put stress on the tailshaft of tranny ,four link's are way more adjustable, have been widely used in all type's of car racing for decades, there is lot's of info on the web check them they are really sweet,

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

not yet I will take the camera to the shop tommrow and take some pic's it's not done yet just picture a rod coming of the the top of the diff going to a cross member that has two vertical 4 link like bracket's that go up into the tunnel with side hole's drilled in them for the rod to bolt to . It's pretty much a 3 link. sorry i suck explaining thing's

i didnt mean they were no good, im saying that the torque arm is a good all round setup. A 4 link car can be built to go straight, or built to handle. Not easily both.

as for the tailshaft, many companies make crossmember mounted torque arms that eliminate this issue, as well as the flex.

this one for instance

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

18436572... sry to tell ya bud but the tq arm setup is actually more effective than the 4 link setup... 4 links are great for drag strip and allow easily adjustability and lots of diff setups. but throw that 4link into the corners etc and the tq arm will outshine it on both. the stock tq arms have been run in 3rdgen and 4th gens well into the 7s and 9s in the 1/4. the really weak point is the rear of the trans where it connects too.

you should look around in the aftermarket... they are developing tq arm setups for mustangs/early firebirds 67-81/chevelles/RX7's etc since its a all around performer for straight line driving/cornering. the tq arm AKA three link setup is considered an upgrade compared to the 4link.

http://www.bmrfabrication.com/f1/f1ta.html

http://www.grannysspeedshop.com/

http://dagostinoracing.com/index.php...ducts_id=15082

i would keep the tq arm and just look into fabbing up a tunnel mount TQ arm. i just made a tq Arm bracket to fit a ford 8.8 rear. and i went with a jegster tunnel mount tubular tq arm. dont downgrade the susupension unless ur goin all drag racing and no street driving

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

yea blackbir that's cool, I am more talking for drag racing that what I am building right now I have seen the crossmember mount.utimatly for cornering you want independent,or wishbone style (nascar) the stock camaro rear end has's half of 4 link style trailing(flexable) arm's see my point is not handel in corner's my point is to counter act the upward energy of the diff on acceleration rather than have torque arm lift ot the car at it's cg like stephen said I want the diff to be more ridgid and have that energy isoladed at the axle an forced to turn the wheels.here's an anology, take you torqe wrench and tighen a lug to 90ft pounds using a 24" inch extention than remove the extention and recheck torque.or cut your pool que in half and install a spring in the middle and try to break,we could go on and on but we definatly all have good point I have bulit a 3 link triangulated 9" conversion that could go torque or ridgid wich will still facilatate removal of the center sectinon , I have pic's i will put them up tonight.

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

i think i kno what your talking about with the 3link. all and all a good setup. i kno what u mean about the tq arm and the upward movement of the rear end. post some pics and lets see what your thinking of.

i just upload them... click on "go advance" write what u need to and then go to manage attachments and select what pic u want and upload it. pics have to be under 1MB each and 3 is the max per post

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

Are you going to weld that curved bracket mount to the rear end housing or???

How did you determine how far forward/backwards to put that chassis crossbar mount at?

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

looks good. ive seen this before... i think the new stangs have them. that should work out well. what type of rod ends u gona go with? hope ur ready for some vibrations lol... gona have the same prob with my tubular tunnel mount tq arm.

also where did u get the 9" from... moser or strange? im in the process of swapping the brackets off my 9bolt to a ford 8.8 and no one will sell the brackets for the LCA, springs etc... THEY LOOK SO GOOD NEW! compared my my 22yr old brackets moser wont sell them and ive heard alot of poo from strange from ppl on here.

also any reason for the offset? clearance issues? i also mounted my new fuel/brake lines/fuel filter where your pump is up the tranny tunnel lol i can see it in the background of pic 2.

theres ur three link mustang rear in the new stangs

Re: 3rd gen torque arm?

hopefully i can get some chromoly ends, the 9" is out of a 73 f 100 . I fabed the trailing arm mount's and used the stock shock mount (I cut the shock mount off the stock trailing arm mount and welded to the new trailing arm mount which is 1/4 " thick),I used the stock spring mount's as well, and you guesed it the offset is for the drive line, the fuel pump is after the tunnel just above the diff my bracket will hit it if I dont move it ,maybe you could build your bracket's if you cant find them
