Mysterious Clunk and shaking

hi all, got a question, maybe someone has had the same thing happen and knows the fix. When i turn the wheel all the way while i'm moving, doesn't matter which direction, I hear a Loud Clunk from the right front side. When i hear the sound, i cant feel anything in the wheel or in the car. What should i check? wheel bearings, ball joints, are going to be checked, but is there anything else that could cause this?

also, there is a slight shake in the car up to 60mph, and above 60mph the shake gets worse, so i don't drive more than 60mph right now. I'm hoping that the problems are tied together. The shake is in the steering wheel just a bit, but mainly in the car. its bad enough that i can't really pinpoint which side or anything its coming from. could the ball joints or wheel bearings cause this?

also, are the wheel bearings in the rotors? cause when i was looking at new rotors from autozone, they were listed as rotors / wheel bearings

any help will be appreciated

Re: Mysterious Clunk and shaking

Check your sway bar end links, the bolts that connect the sway bar to the lower control arm, this is what happened to mine a few months back.

Alignment? Wheel balance?

The inner and outer bearings and seal are usually purchased separately.

Re: Mysterious Clunk and shaking

It sounds like a balljoint to me, but while you're there, check your tie rod ends, idler arm, and control arm bushings as well. I would also check the nut under the dust cap that holds the wheel bearings in place. If that is loose, it can allow the bearings to slide in and out on the spindle.

As for the vibration at speed, tires and/or alignment are usually the culprits as mentioned by JamesC. Less likely, but also possible are the sway bar-to-frame bushings and play in the steering gear.

As to your question about the wheel bearings, the hub is cast into the center of the rotor so it is all 1 piece instead of your typical 2 piece hub/rotor design. You should replace the wheel bearings any time you replace the rotors, and repack the bearings with fresh grease any time you have the brake pads replaced.

Re: Mysterious Clunk and shaking

will check the tie rod ends too. would i be better off just replacing all the bushings up front? going to replace the ball joints, and the wheel bearings first though, and see if that fixes it. the car pulls slightly to the right, but when sitting on level ground the left (drivers) side sits a little bit lower up front. pretty sure that is just the ball joints.

how bad are the ball joints to replace? last set i did was on a chevy cavalier, and they were really a pain. had to drill out three 1/2inch rivets on each side just to pull the ball joints, and the bolt the new ones back in. are the camaro's easier or worse? from looking at the pictures of replacements it looks like they will be easier than that, but i don't know if the pics are accurate and haven't pulled a wheel/tire yet to go and look.

thanks, for the info

Re: Mysterious Clunk and shaking

I just did mine a month or 2 ago. First time ever doing balljoints and it took me a couple hours for each. Getting them lined up perfectly and staying that way when taking them out and putting the new ones in was the most frustrating part of it. I bought a cheapie Harbor Freight balljoint press. It's basically a massive C-clamp and its not an easy job. Putting the new balljoints in the bottom of my freezer overnight helped along with taking my Dremel and using a sanding drum to clean out the control arm holes for the balljoints.
