symptoms of bad u joints

hey everyone its me again.... this september i am going to be getting the bmr torque arm and their relocation bracket.. they make excellent products by the way.... so i will have to take my driveshaft out anyways..... but here is my problem, everytime i put the transmisson in any gear i hear this tiny little clunk or screech noise and when it down shifts i hear it also... im pretty sure its either my u joints or the torque arm bushing or maybe even the torque arm itself.. because they never have been replaced... i think the way gm mounted these things on the driveshaft is not the best idea they came up with.. the transmisson shifts and works perfectly... i have a stock aluminum driveshaft that came in my 1988 trans am gta.. i was wondering what kind of u joint do i need to buy for it... i would like to replace both of them while im doing my torque arm upgrade... any help would be appreciated...

also i have a stock rubber mount for my transmission.... would upgrading to a poly mount be wise... what is the benefit of a poly mount over the stock rubber type.... thanks again..

Re: symptoms of bad u joints

The stock TA mounts to the trans tailshaft, not the driveshaft

The TA mount can be at fault but usually the issue is with the mounting bolts coming loose or the crossmember mount breaking (very common)

A bad U joint will make a clunking sound when you shift gears and also make clunking noises when you shift under light throttle and coasting

A good way to check is to put the car in neutral (chock the wheels) and twist the DS. If you can feel any play between the DS and rearend yoke then the U joint is bad

oops... i meant to say tailshaft sorry about that.. but thanks man what you described is exactly whats happening it makes a popping sound under light throttle and coasting and whenever i put it in any gear..... i just dont like the idea of the torque arm mounted on the tailshaft plus its weak and it flexes... so im just going to get bmrs torque arm and relocation bracket.... i will do that test about the driveshaft in the morning... but im pretty sure thats what it is...

If you decide to get the torque arm off of the tranny we have a relocation crossmember that will do the job. It has several different adjustment holes in the front to allow you to change the location of the front of your torque arm. If you do any drag racing this will help you tune your car for launch performance. Here is a link to our site. If you have any questions please give me a call.
