How do I know if I have a 9 or 10 bolt?

I searched and didn't come up with anything. I have a 84 Sport coupe with the 305 auto. I know it has the 3.08 gearset right now. But I'm going to order gears shortly. Is it as easy as counting the bolts on the cover? Thanks.

Mark.

An 84 should have a 10-bolt (barring a swap somewhere along the line, which is what I assume happened with the motor).

Also, 9 bolts didn't come with 3.08 ratio in our cars, only 2.77, 3.27, and 3.45.

Re: How do I know if I have a 9 or 10 bolt?

It was bone stock when I bought it a few weeks ago with the exception of the Dynomax cat back so I'm pretty sure it's a stock 3rd member. The 305/700r4 are on there way out . Thanks guy's!!

Mark.

PS. Opps, I guess I did read that the 9 bolts in our cars never came with 3.08's and just wasn't thinking when I posted this thread. Sorry.

Actually, 3.08 is the only # between a 9 & 10 bolt. From there (up & down), 9-bolts can be close, but not quite.

10 bolt & 9 bolt
2.73 & 2.77
3.08 & 3.08
3.23 & 3.27
3.73 & 3.7
Etc., etc.
