82-92 3rd gens, are the spindles the same?

I ask because of the different brake options there are. I want to send mine to get them modded for c5 brakes, but I dont want to be with out my car, so I'm thinking of picking some up at the bone yard. Are the spindles the same through all years? How about the 4th gens?

Re: 82-92 3rd gens, are the spindles the same?

All third gen spindles are the same, except for the ones from cars with 1le brakes. The 1le brakes consist of 12" rotors and aluminum calipers, and odds are you will not find a pair of those spindles at the JY.
4th gens use a dual A-arm front suspension, so, no, 4th gen spindles won't work. They don't have a mount for the strut, but instead they have a mount for an upper balljoint.

And even the 1LE's are modified OE.

Why not just buy modified spindles first then send your old ones in later and get a core charge refund later? This way your car is only non-operational for a shorter time.

Re: 82-92 3rd gens, are the spindles the same?

I hope you guys don't mind me throwing in a couple of questions here. I've heard different things about the 1LE spindles. I've always heard that the outer bearing is larger, but some people say that the spindle itself is different at the outer wheel bearing location, and others that say the rotor is different in that it accepts a larger bearing while the spindle is the same as any other.

Anyone know the part numbers off hand?

I have also read that the spindles were changed in the last two years of production, but this hasn't been verified either.

(I did a quick search BTW.)

The following from AndyZ28, one the first members to accomplish the swap: "The "heavy duty" outer bearings are for 1LE cars. On 1LE cars the inner bearing is the same as all other 3rdgen cars. But the outer has a larger O.D. The I.D. is the same."

The standard inner is an A6, the outer A34.

The 1LE outer is A3.

I modified the OE spindles and used the above on my 1LE set-up, so the spindle itself is the same. Supposedly the bosses (where the dust shield bolts on and where the modification occurrs) are a bit beefier on the 90+ models, IIRC. Other than that, the production run is the same.

Re: 82-92 3rd gens, are the spindles the same?

Ahh, that explains things then. The rotor is the key to swap to the larger outer bearing. The latter model spindles are different, but not at the bearing location. I'll have to look for a difference in the area around the dust shield the next time I run across a later model at the junkyard.

Thank you, that was very helpful!

I think flynbye.com only modifies your spindles, correct me if I'm wrong though, but your way does save me a trip to the yard

Re: 82-92 3rd gens, are the spindles the same?

I bought a LS1 brake kit from Ed Miller, and he supplied me with the spindles (which were supposedly modified stock spindles..) Now one side sticks out more than the other.. Could it be that the spindles were not of the same year? (For example, perhaps one would be from a earlier third gen, and the wheel sticking out would be from a 1LE or 90+ camaro??)

I think there is a difference in spindles, that would explain my weird situation..

I have already started a thread on this: http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/su...d-farther.html (Left wheel pushed farther out than right)

82-91 spindles have the same part number (and I'd guess 92 as well, but my catalog ends at 91). While the 1LE has a different part number, it's the same as the above with modification.
