So far I'm happy with the Dunlop SP8000's in that size on my Malibu except for driving in snow that's over about 3" deep (I don't get spit off the road but small hills are a challenge). Actually they are ZR's and they're mounted on 8-1/2" wide rims. BFGoodrich at least used to make that size but I haven't seen it listed in Tire Rack's ads lately.

Andy,

One of the highest performing 15" tires you can get in anything near the correct size would be the Yokohama AVS Intermediate. They are still available in 235/60VR15. I assume that you're looking for some more traction with those rockin' new brakes! I just got a set of the above mentioned Yokos for my GN but haven't put them on yet. They are actually pretty cheap too, around $80 from Tirerack.

The 50 series is a low aspect ratio tire. I have broken belts in two left front tires from very hard cornering. The lower the aspect ratio the less this tends to happen. Something about sidewall flex.

Hey Andy. I'd check out www.tirerack.com. They have a rating system for each tire and the Dunlops, the BFG Comp T/As, and a set from Bridgestone (can't remember the name) all rated pretty good. They also have some of the best prices I've seen, anywhere from around $80 to $126 for good rated tires. Also, www.discounttire.com.

damn Jeff Gordon...at least it's a Chevy!!

Andy,

What kind of tires (brand) did you break down the sidewall from cornering? I work with many of the tire manufacturers and I'm just curious. Also, the Yoko AVS' prime purpose in life (even 235/60VR15) is to receive the type of abuse you are talking about giving it. The treadlife would probably be about 15k miles, but they'll grip like crazy during that period of time. I would be surprised if you could find a much grippier 15" tire, including ones wider than 235. "Most" of those other wider tires use constructions that are compromised for all-around use (decent treadwear, ride comfort, some snow capability, etc...). The AVS doesn't pretend to have any of those, just great grip and steering feel. I still haven't got mine mounted on the GN yet, otherwise I could give you some better first-hand experiences. One thing about them though, the sidewall lettering design is very plain. This may idicate that they are intended to be on the car more for autocrossing than they are for looking cool while cruising.

I think the SP8000 is probably a pretty good tire also, but keep in mind that the P245/50ZR15 is 24.7" tall and the Yoko 235 is 26" tall. What tire diameter does your speedo gear think it has? Could the smaller o.d. affect the computer because the speedo is off?

Good Luck.

yeah. the 15" wheels and tires have to much flex w/ the stock sizes. 16" is better.

LimaBravoNiner,(I'm an ex11B4H Airborne Ranger). My engine has no computer. I have broken a Goodyear Eagle, and a BF Goodrich radial T/A. On the same curve. I see that I may be forced into the 16" zone.
Thanx,ANDYZ28
