Are these kits worth it?

I am almost done restoring my interior, and suspension is next. Car hasn't ran since at least 2006, and hasn't been inspected since around 2004. I am sure the stock suspension is a night mare.

1. What are the MUST replacements for when a car has been sitting.
2. What are the recommended replacements
3. Are these kits worth it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/291158216462?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Re: Are these kits worth it?

1. Anything that is dry-rotted. Check all bushings and rubber parts.

2. Poly bushings across the board.

3. Possibly if for no other reason than it gives you what you need in a nice package all at once. However, if you can crawl under the car and check- If any of the parts above will still hold grease and don't seem to be extremely loose/worn out then you can hold off. However, if money is no object, and you have no records of any of it every being replaced before, then sure, have at it and get the kit.

Re: Are these kits worth it?

I wouldn't say moneys not an object, I am just taking my build slow. Not sure if you seen the build thread I started:

LINK

I just want to do it right the FIRST time, especially if it will be easier before installing motor and paint, etc. Especially also since I got my hands on a new rear end and if I am pulling that out, meswell replace some other stuff while its out right? Which brings me to another question, if you'd pull the read out of your car, what would you check and replace, same as front?

Also, bushing.. will this kit take care of everything? http://www.ebay.com/itm/ENERGY-HYPER-FLEX-MASTER-BUSHING-KIT-82-92-CAMARO-/190717133756?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AFirebird&hash=item2c67a083bc&vxp=mtr

Summit, 1ATony and no doubt others have kits but none I've seen at this price. Seems really cheap so maybe the parts really cheap. Or you can source the just the parts you really need individually. Depends on what you'll do with the car and if you want stock or uprated suspension and feel.

Which kit, first or second I posted? Also, can anyone link the other kits? I don't want super aftermarket so stock or little better is fine. you're right though, those parts are probably cheap and you do get what you pay for.

Re: Are these kits worth it?

The "kits" do not come with engine mounts, tranny mounts, torque arm mounts or sway bar bushings (they come with end links bushings)...
Since there were 2 Torque arm bushings used, and many different size sway bar bushings....

I did A LOT to my car... Alston's and Spohn SFC's, Bilstein all around, new Moog Springs, Poly everything, Del Lum A Arm bushings, Jamex Strut Tower Brace, Wonder Bar, Founders 3 way LCA's and Panhard bar, just got my rear end redone & Spohn torque arm...

I am utterly amazed at how nice / smooth and in control my firebird rides....

Re: Are these kits worth it?

The kit is made by midwest, I do not know anything about that manufacturer though that might not be saying much. My advice would be to purchase all MOOG parts through a local parts store that will keep a warranty on file. That way if they need replacing due to wearing out, abuse, bad installation, misuse or whatever it is a no questions asked swap. Also the tie rod connectors/adjusters you show are the weak stamped steel versions--pass on those and get the beefy version that look like really long nuts.

Re: Are these kits worth it?

It's good to replace all the steering linkage, balljoints, struts and mounts at the same time. I get a lot of piece of mind from replacing everything in my front end with new, quality parts. Also by replacing it all at once you won't be replacing it one part at a time as it all wears out.

I used Moog steering and ball joints, GC weight jack springs, koni struts, J&M product strut mounts, GW del-a-lum bushings, timken wheel bearings, QA1 tie rod sleeves, Energy suspension sway bar bushings and links, and added a TDS wonder bar. Of course you don't have to go to the extreme I did like the GC weight jacks or GW del-a-lum bushings, I just wanted to give you a list of parts and give you an example of a quality build. It was well worth it. I love the way it drives every day and handles on the race track without concern of any old parts breaking because it's all NEW!!!

Re: Are these kits worth it?

That prothane kit seems to have a lot of sway bar bushings which would cover the various sizes... it shows 4 sway bar end links, though it only list the front... and it seems to have 2 different torque arm bushings, looks like they are 2 piece... only thing missing is motor mount...

Do a search on Spohn wonder bar, some have had problems with it...
There are factory ones and other brands...

Re: Are these kits worth it?

Top down solutions sells refurbished factory wonder bars AND there own "suped up" version for cheaper than any other providers. Alot of your after market wonder bars are oversized and overpriced. If you look into what they are meant to do you can see that a giant one isn't necessary and the factory piece will provide more than adequate bracing.

That Spohn bar though, it looks to be about the same size as the one that TDS makes.

I've never heard of prothane, they look similar to Energy Suspension though.

Re: Are these kits worth it?

I understand the want to "do it right the first time" too btw, and I believe suspension is definitely an area that it is important to pay attention to the details. I would probably do the same thing if in your position.

Re: Are these kits worth it?

Thanks guys, all the information is appreciated. I am close to getting my interior back in, and when that happens it's all suspension next.

Any other input is also appreciated.
