Gaining Torque/HP on the cheap for a 5.7?

Not sure if this is the right place or not, but I'm sure someone will let me know if it ain't.

I'm running a TBI 350 in a fullsize blazer and am trying to get a little more out of it. I blew a head gasket about a week ago and in turn wasted a piston. It's sitting on the engine stand right now waiting for me to go back through it. I know how much it's gonna cost to do a *rebuild* but I'm looking for a little more out of it. I'm keeping the factory style TBI for ease of use issues, but the thing is fairly anemic in factory mode.

Any help???

Thanks in advance for your help.

Might look in to a little hotter cam, heads or a better intake manifold. I have a 350 TBI too and set up ram air for it.

I installed the "383" truck cam from GM performance parts. It'll work with the computer fine and will make a ton of low/mid range torque.

start with air flow. ultimate tbi, open element, and diy afpr mods are a must to get started. with a touch more base timign than stock and adjusting the fuel pressure a little you will make a difference you can feel. add even a mild cam and you will really feel the difference. something liek an LT4 hot cam with your stock 1.5 rockers shoudl produce a nice long torque curve when matched to a edelbrock performer tbi or holley tbi intake.
since you are dealing with a heavy vehicle with tall tires you may also want to invest in a bit more gear. although gears do not actually make any more torque they do multiply it and help to get things moving.
and don't forget a full exhaust system to get all that inhale to exhale.

Thanks for the replys folks. Here's where I stand right now. Again, the motor is stock, the only additions that I have to date are a K&N air filter and a single 3" exhaust w/o a cat and a 2 chamber flowmaster.

I pulled to motor apart last night and either this thing wears like iron, or it's new recently. I've put 50k miles on my truck since I got it, but the pistons/rings/bearing/block/cam everything looked BRAND NEW. The only thing that was toast, was a head gasket. You're prb asking yourself why I took the whole thing apart for a h/g, well, the truck has over 200k miles on it.

Thanks again for the replys, I starting to think more and more and some of these mods. The adjustable fuel pressure regulator, where are you folks getting those. I know Turbo city sells them, as well as some nice Throttle Body's, is there anywhere else?

I would stay away from the LT4 hot cam in a truck application. I'd recommend the Crane 2030.

I have a 1993 Burban with a vortec 350, although it sounds like your not ready to go that far, try this. When you pull out your fuel regulator you will see that the stud in it is threaded but there is no way to turn it. Take it out and go buy a set screw from a hardware store and put it in. Turn it in and out to set psi. I would personally run a chip, headers, edelbrock TBI cam, Edelbrock TBI intake, and some roller rockers. There is also one last thing you can do if you have a cold air intake. Go to napa and get a section of 3" exhaust tube and cut it to lenght to replace the sound box. Take out the sound box and hose clamp the tube in place. I made one and had it chromed, the whole thing cost me $23.00, they usually sell for $70.00 You can get a fuel psi regulator from jet performance. They sell chips too. It is a little easier to deal with than the stocker and it has an indicator. The items listed were all on my motor in my Burban before I slapped a vortec in it, some of it is still on it. It is a noticeable horsepower increase. If you have any questions or need pictures let us know.
