91 Lo3 (i believe) RS

Hey all. New to the board here, and will probably be hangin out. Well I just bought a camaro. Beutiful car, lovin it so far.

Heres a pic

Well from what I've been reading, the engine (v8 305) has only 170 HP. Now this thing sits me back in my seat damn good when I take off. So a couple of questions. Is that jsut cause of torque?

second question....I was reading and sorta thought that maybe the only difference between the 305 with 17 HP and the 305 with 200 some HP are the same engine, with just different injectors.....can anyone shed some light on this for me? thanks!

ohhh i can see ure car much better now, im on my girlfirends computer. I think my darknes is set too high to see it on mine. Nice car is it a 91 or 92 and what kinda rims are those?

Ure question earlier on how the tpi cars have 200 hp. Ure best way to hit 200 hp if ure looking for a little more increase in power
1) look in tech articles how to install the open element 14*3 filter
2)3 inch cat back exhaust and 3 inch cat
3) headers

This will put u in at about 200 hp

also get the fan switch that they sell at www.thunderracing.com

It seems that when the car gets realy hot like at around 220 deg. There is a slight power loss.
Since ure on a tight budget id get the first 2 things i said, headers are a bit too much on ure wallet i presume. And the temp. switch. Also make sure u do a full tune up and get the car running in top shape.( msd blaster coil is a + too, only 40 bucks)

well im 19 in college, and workin for me dad.....that'll tell you how much money I got to throw around :-) A new exhaust system would be too expensive....I know that!! Just putting a cat, and a muffler on my old honda was 226 bucks...

open element 14*3 filter might be in my range...and headers......lol ummm not for some time!!

what about gearing and such? does pully's make a difference?

Those rims are eagle something or another and its got brand new tires on it. The guy spent about 1K on rims and tires....and its a 91 RS. Wish it was a 91 Z28

oh well

same here man im 19 and in college too. Yea id do the filter mod first its only 40 bucks, and thermostat switch another 40 . Then save for the catback exhaust. Check out jegs they sell the hooker catback for about 260+new cat, plus install at a muffler shop intotal about 460. Gearing realy helps but its a lot of money(200 for gears,100 for install kit, and then installation) prob a good 600 in total. Pulleys arent realy worth more than 5 hp.

There are some free and cheap mods to free up some weight and get some better performence......

Try the Ultimate TBI that's found in the tech articles............If emissions aren't a problem, then go ahead and removed the smog pump and all that junk from the engine.........

Then a K&N 14x3 Open Element would be the next best thing.......

$99 SLP Posi Unit...........makes driving more exciting.......

Yeah these LO3 engines have torque which makes them seem fast........But once you get out of the low speeds, they are Really Slow......I think that's why they called them R.S. camaros.....

I agree with FLYNLOW92rs, I have an 89 rs...do the free stuff and you will be surprised at how much it will wake things up, especially if you have a different cat back. Take your time with stuff dude....when I purchased my car back in univeristy I didnt have any cash to do anything to it.....but in due time I have been able to do some stuff to it and finally this winter is going to be my best mod session since I have finished school, doing intake, cam, rear end, rear suspension and exhaust, did the body last year, but I have alot planned for this winter but trust me, like you I have been planning on this stuff for years, it will all be worth it in the long run, just be patient, finish your school and then focus on the car when you actually have the cash for it (not that your car looks bad now or anything)

If you've never driven a V-8 powered sportscar before, an RS will definitely seem powerful and fast......

Until you either have your a$$ handed to you in a drag race

or

Until you get behind the wheel of a bigger, better V-8.

If you are financially challenged (aren't we all) just do the free and inexpensive mods here on this site. Then your car will at least be decent, maybe even respectable. Just take good care of it until you get your hands on some cash to put better mods on it.

Don't let it get ragged out like most 3gens I've seen where I used to live.

As for your stalling problem, check for a good spark and good fuel pressure first.

where do you live?

Jegs has the Dynomax cat-back for ~$160. It's only a 2.5" pipe, but I just read in Hot Rod of a guy with an '87 Formula running 11.8 second ET's with a 2.5" single exhaust.

Granted he had replace the muffler with a Dynomax Ultra Flow, but it just goes to show you don't have to have a 'big' exhaust to make HP.

Anyway...... even if you just started out with a $15 open element that comes with a paper filter, just buy the K&N filter after the paper one gets dirty. A paper one will flow fine until it gets dirty. That'll give you time to save up for the K&N filter

And DO NOT get a fan switch without replacing the thermostat. If you're gonna get a 180* switch (on at 200*/off at 185*) then you need a 180* thermostat. You can get one at AutoZone or Pepboys for $4.

If you know anything about timing, try advancing it ~4* BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). Your stock base timing is 0*. If you need to know how, look at the "Tech Articles" on the homepage of www.thirdgen.org.

Those few things will help quite a bit. Eventually you should look into replacing your rear end with (as already said) posi, AND 3.42 gears. No more than that. 3.73's are too much unless you're ready to drop in a 350.

Then you need to get a cam out of an LT1. With the 3.42's, posi, TBI mods, catback, and good traction..... mid 14's should be easy.

For what it is worth I bought some underdrive pulleys from March and the insert said that I would see an 11HP gain at the rear wheels from using these. The first thing I did was go out and hit 120 MPH. To tell you the truth I still think 11HP is hard to feel but, I tended to believe them. Keep in mind that underdrive pulleys will drop your ammeter reading. Especially when you have the headlights on at an intersection with the wipers going and defrost blowing with the radio cranked and turning right with the blinker. ha ha.
