Need Help With New Setup Decision!!

Ok first off the ole' 305 might have a rod knock at idle. Or it may be a cracked flywheel, this has yet to be determined. Anyway if it ends up being a rod knock I have come upon a freshly rebuilt 327 with a forged bottom end, short block only. For 500 dollars. So I figure I would spend atleast that much if not more on a 350 rebuild to get the parts I want which this 327 already has.
My vortec's will bolt right up with the 58 cc chambers, so should I go LT1 cam or ZZ4 to still to be able to use tbi? I would probably switch to a holley 670 tbi in the process. Or should I go ahead and throw in a Performer RPM cam or something with a carb which should yield near 400 hp? Since it's already a good bottom end I'm thinking the carb route would be nice with a power adder later this year.

Let me know what you think.

I'd verify the compression ratio before you figure on anything else.

-58cc heads
-.025" deck height (stock)
-.028" x 4.1" GM head gasket #10105117
-flat top pistons with 6cc valve relief's

will result in roughly 9.9:1 compression ratio

If the block has been decked or the pistons have smaller reliefs (or domes) compression will be higher..... probably too much for the LT1 or ZZ4 cam.

Stay away from the Edelbrock cams. They are old tech. New lobe profiles offer the same power with better part throttle operation.

Personally I'd run something close to the ZZ4 specs. You don't mention whether this 327 is based on a roller block or is an older casting. It'll be much less costly to run a flat tappet cam if it is an older block.

Well I havent got to see the motor yet but I'm betting it's an old casting, not for sure yet though. I think I'm running close to 10 now on compression, my vortecs have been milled down .030 and I"m using a .017 steel head gasket.

You think maybe the ZZ4 cam or LT4 hot cam then? Might have to go carb with a cam that big, to much tuning involved.
