Running a little funny

Ever since we put a complete exhaust (headers, y-pipe, muffler, ect.) on my friends' 91 305 tbi 700r4, you can basically hear it bank fire at idle while in gear. When you put it in neutral this goes away and the idle goes up just a tad. I believe this is something simple, but I can think of it.

Is it more of a pop, or is it really backfiring? I wouldnt worry if its just popping a little. Ive had cars do that before. Probably the idle is a bit on the lean side.

More like you can hear/ feel every cylinder fire. Its not back firing though.

It is common to hear various new ticking soudns with headers. The thin walls of the exhaust primaries do not dampen out sounds like the stock cast manifolds do. You can sometimes hear the fire as well as valve trian noise.
