Until I get the EBL and some kind of chip tuning stuff, I've just been doing basic things to my L03. In the sticky about usual tbi mods it mentions adjusting base timing, but not anything about a good safe place to put it. I have 93 octane gas here (good ole east coast) and am wondering if advancing it 4 degrees or so would be beneficial.

My engine is TPI with L98 cam,, east coast exxon 93 octane.. 15* base timing.. 8-12 degrees should be fine, just listen to the engine... 8 degrees is safe as hell.
Any ideas what kind of gain can be had by just advancing the timing? Yes I do know to listen for ping, and know what it sounds like (buddies coronet needs tuned). Any guesses on where optimal power will be? Should be similar between stock engines (though obviously not identical).

For non swirl port (fast burn) heads this is normal. Swirl port heads by design do not need a lot of inital (and or total) timing. 0° to 4° base is all you need. Most 300+ hp swirl port headed combos will need only 28° of total timing. This was a key design feature for these heads (economy, torque, and emissions).
