Turbo's and TBI's

I have a 5.7L L05 TBI 9C1 and after reading the thread about the remote mount turbo cavy i have decided that remote mount might just be the way to go. After thoroughly searching i have learned several things that i believe to be true (correct me if im wrong)
1. I need a new tbi, probably from a 454
2. running a line from the oil pan to the turbo and using a pump is the best system for oiling
3. if i use a rising rate fuel pressure regulator i don't need to re-tune the prom
4. An intercooler isn't necessary if i run less than say 10 psi
However i still have a few questions remaining
1. how is the best way to attach the pipe with the compressed air up to the tbi itself?
2. what size turbo is appropriate for a 350?
3. I have heard various suggestions about fuel pumps ranging from warlboro to holly to tpi pumps. What is the most effective?
4. If i go with a two stage boost controller, at what psi will the engine run reliably (for the every day setting) and what psi will it be able to handle (for the race setting) assuming it is in good repair and tune?
Any insight that can be shared in the matter would be greatly appreciated

p.s. i was not entirely sure whether to post this here or in power adders, but seeing as many of the questions are related to TBI in specific i chose here

wow, i thought i was the oly one thinking out of the box.....im in the process of building a budget astro van with a goodwrench 350 and an sts remote mount turbo.....

this is what im going to do....

1.i have a 4.3 tbi....and im still going to use it with 5.7 injectors....the reason is.....i have it already, and boost will still force its way into my intake.....if i was building an NA engine id buy a bigger TB.

2. i would use 454 injectors, but i have heard tons of bad things about the....poor responce, because of there size and they tend to leak. so for the extra fuel im going to use SDS EM-4: EIC its called an EIC, big with alot of the import guys.

3. im going to run areomotive fuel regulator.....027-13301 thats the part number. i have seen people with superchargers have great sucess with this unit.....FMU's are sh*t for tbi they put too much pressure on the injector.

4. im not going to run an intercooler.....i plan on running around 6 to 7 psi....if you guys are planing on running more boost then that....it would be smart for an engine rebuild......forged 8:1 pistons.....copper or heavy duty head gaskets....total seal rings(i just like those, i used them on a turbo starion i built others are good too)......

5.Wynjammer Superchargers this guy makes supercharger kits for tbi....hes a cool guy, and i am going to call him to find out how much he would charge for his tbi bonnet.

6. now the remote set up is cool, but you have to have an oil pump to retrive the used oil from the turbo.....now this is a tricky one, and this is why im going to fork over the cash for the sts universal system......not just any pump will do because the oil that comes out of the turbo is not under pressure....it drips out....the oil going into the turbo is under the pressure of the engines oil pump.........so to answer your question....no if you have the oil being pumped fromthe turbo there is no point to welding a return to the oil pan....just have it go to the valve cover...through the breater....easier than hacking up your oil pan.

7. i see what you are asking you wanna build it on your own....me too, but i dont want to do it and mess up...and sts is very quite about what turbos they use for there remote system, and when i call around no one seems to know either(turbonetics)......againg thats why i say buy the kit....they have done all the guess work.....and they give you all the stuff to hang the turbo too.

but if your a die hard DIY'er id look for a turbo that has a hot side (compressor side) that would seem way to small for you engine....with all the distance you need to create alot of pressure to turn that bitty.....and a large turbine side......maybe a 20g from these guys made for a talon? Forced Perfomance - Custom Turbochargers & High Performance Products I toyed with the idea of using a dodge 2.2 t3 for this....and having the turbine side built to a super 70.....but i dont wanna spend alot of cash and be wrong.....but if your looking for a turbo that will work for this right out of the junk yard, i think you may need to have a rethink on this project.

8. fuel pump? i like the msd universal inline efi pump.....but thats just me.....the tbi runs at around 13psi stock.....and when running a turbo you want you fuel pressure to stay at least 5 psi higher then the boost....so me at 8psi boost on a 1:1 refenence from the regulator....the fuel should be around 21 psi under full load.....i think that would work....but i may change my mind later plus this pump puts out enought for the EIC too.

9. you 2 stage question......depends on your turbo and what you engine is built for.....im using a bare bones goodwrench 350......lol....till it blows up.....butthere is more to think about.....

NOW I HAVE A QUESTION........

does anyone know a good tbi cam that will work with this set up? the cam thing has got me thinking too much....ill probably start with a midrange tbi cam and go from there....i still need this van to tow the race car to the track!

Wow, a lot of misinformation here. There is absolutly nothing inherently wrong with BB injectors, they are axactly the same size and weight as stock injectors, heck if anything they are light because the hole that the fuel is injected through is bigger.

You really need to do a whole lot more research before you dive into turbo's. The piggy back controlers you want to use don't work that well, and you'll never make more than 300 hp with the 5.7 injectors at 21 psi. The info you need to do this project correctly is right here on these boards, I'm not going to spoon feed it to you but I'll give you two pointers.

Look up the EBL, and then look up how to calculate how much injector you are going to need to make a specific HP. That should get you started and get you asking better questions.

i had no problems with my EIC when i used one on a starion...worked great....and as far as the BB injectors....that just what i have heard....and i put that in there....plus i like my cars to idle.

i guess what im trying to say is we all have different ways we do stuff.....my starion made 353 rwhp through a stock size tbi butterfly......EIC worked great.....may not in this case but we will see......i have never been a fan of large injectors...ever....when you can just add more little ones......thats how i roll......my combo may be wrong.....but i think it will work fine for what i want it to be.

Your Starion might have made 353 RWHP, but the method is very CRUDE compared to a properly dialed in EBL setup. Properly dialed in with the 2-bar MAP sensor, 2:1 FMU, proper fueling, etc, it would run rings around the band-aided setup.

My own Weiand 142 supercharged 350 TBI is running GM 90 lb/hr TBI injectors at 27 PSI (@ 7 PSI boost). Yet at 18 in/hg idle the fuel pressure is only 14 PSI.

For the two weeks before the 4L60E was torn apart, it would achieve 17 mpg on my daily commute in a 5,300 lbs G-Van.

Fast, do you have any dyno or estimated hp #'s for that combination?

You had to rely on band aids because there was no way to control your stock starion computer. We have a better way and it's called DIY chip tuning. We also have a very cool product called the EBL that will allow your stock ECM to see boost and fully compensate for it. You past experience has been tuning completely in the dark. When you have the ability to fully control the computer things like big injectors don't have ANY drawbacks. You just dial back your fueling at idle and crank it up under load.
