TBI engine swap?????

I now have a LO3 92 RS!!!!
I read in the tech. section that you can put a carb onto you TBI engine. I also read that after you do this, you can get rid of the ECM??? Is this true??? I want to put my freshly built 327 SBC into my car, but wasn't too sure of the wiring problems I might encounter??? Can this be done easily??? Is my trans. computer controlled??? (i have auto) If I swapped engines and followed the steps in the tech. article, will the ECM become useless??? Please let me know!!!

congrats. how many miles it have? the 305 can go a lot of miles. if you have alot maybe you can try doing heads cam and intake. how strict are the emissions there? 327s make power from having big cams and reving high which makes for bad emissions.

robleegordon, I haven't swapped anything over to carb yet but I am going to when I swap my engine. Yeah the ECM becomes usless and u don't even need it anymore. As for the wiring and such, I am not sure. You would have to ask someone that has already done it. I would go over to the carb section and ask or go to this thread

http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/Forum17/HTML/000040.html

I asked pretty much the same question and a lot of people posted about what I would need, what I might loose. stuff like that. Check it out.

Hope this helps.

As for emissions, there are none where I live(lucky me) so I don't need a cat of muffler. The car has 57,158 miles on it, but it's a dog and I want a little more power. I've built street rods before (74 Camaro,41 willys
and a 63 Nova, but I didn't have any fuel injection or computers to screw with. I'm new at this part.

I haven't yet switched over to carb on the 350, but when the computer becomes useless, so does the stock distributor. Also, you'll have to change out fuel pumps, or get and adjustable fuel pump, because a carb can't accept the amount of pressure that the fuel pump blows. You'll blow the needles out of the carb. There are a few other things, that I'm not really sure about, if you have an auxilary fan, one of them will be controlled by the ecm so you'll probably have to add a switch into the block and splice it into your fan. But when you do carb out the car, it'll probably be like a diet, since you can ditch all of the electrical junk, and besides, who doesn't like working on a carbed out car better? I think that in 92 they switched over to a PCM (powertrain control module) instead of the ECM which manages only the engine. But with all of the people that do these engine changes, I don't think that it would be a big deal, at the most you'll probably loose your overdrive.

Good luck,
-=-Mike

you wont lose overdrive, but you will lose your torque converter lock up unless you get a "torque converetr lock-up kit". i know that TCI has one available through jegs, the part nymber is 890-376600. B&M also has ne through jegs. the part number is 130-70244 withmech. speedo, and 130-70248 with electric speedo.

the TCI one is like 70 bucks and the B&M one is like 170.

hope this helps.

I rewired my last RS with a 700R4 with a $10 switch, inline fuse and a wiring diagram from a Chey Hi Performance and never had a bit of trouble from it. What this does is leave 1st through 3rd on the converter and locks up 4th only. Need any more info I can look into my archives and find the part number of the switch and wiring diagram which might be something others might find useful. By the way the 3 years spent with an automatic trans were the pits! Driving since 1970, all manual except for this unwanted venture into no clutch downshifting. Good luck!
