attn: PABLO!! if your still around

I know your a ******** to people that ask dumb questions, and im not sure if you will consider this dumb but here goes anyhow, since i have read a ton of your posts and you know your stuff.
I have an 89 RS L03.. it "knocks" under light acceleration, and only under acceleration.. like quarter throttle or less.. and its bad.. sounds like the mustang at the end of Gone in 60 seconds, what might cause this. This question has been asked several times but never been given a good reply.. maybe you can shed some light

Pablo is a ******** to everybody, but he's gone now, went to the military or something.
Is it the engine knocking? Be a tad more specific. Is it worse when you floor it or does it ONLY happen under light acceleration? No matter what PaBLOW says I DO know alot about cars.

It might be detonation (knocking or pinging from bad gas) or you might have a rod going bad. Checked your oil level and oil pressure lately?

what kind of gas do you buy? if you have changed the brand or grade of gas you by lately it may be spark knock, if the car doesn't like the kind of gas it is getting. you may also want to check and make sure the timing is set right, if it is when you are poulling away from stops at light throttle it may be a little too much intitial timing.

can we please not take time out of posts to bag on people. it just sounds kinda childish. thanks

Im still here, i leave NEXT monday

My car did that too for some reason back when it was stock. You might want to try some top engine cleaner or in my case what i used was water to clean out the carbon buildup that may be causing your problem. Thats the only thing I can think of short of an inoperative EGR valve.. do you by chance ever get a code 32? The computer advances timing to compensate for EGR. and if the egr is not functioning then that advanced timing might cause knock being that it takes some EGR to decrease knock sensitivity. Try the decarbonization trick first though

You might be on to something.. if i ride on the highway for like 20 minutes in 4th gear.. i get code 32.. so normally i drive around in third... hmm ill try the carbon buildup stuff.. and if thats not the case.. i dont have the stuff to fix my timing.. how much would it cost to get corrected.. or checked for that matter.. and what should it be set at.

The code only gets set when you drive past 55 mph and you hold your tps steady. It doesnt mean the egr valve routine is not trying to function if those qualifiers arent met for the code. EGR is working nearly all the time except for WOT. What happens is exhaust gas is recirculated back into your intake to cool the charge and to hence reduce Nox emissions and increase gas mileage slightly. When egr is present the fluid in the cyl needs more lead time to combust so the computer advances timing a proportional amount to egr. It definately sounds like thats your problem allthough ill bet you have some carbon build up as well

To test your egr valve you need one of those little hand held vacuum pumps and you put it on the egr diaghphragm and pull some vacuum on it.. it should hold vacuum. I forgot the actual number in inhg to pull on it but its likely not holding vacuum and staying shut so no egr is happening. It could also be your egr solenoid.

good luck

If Pablo knows what he's talking about here which it sounds like he does then maybe he does know a little something, but that still gives him no right to be a **** . What octane gas are you using? A friend of mines Firebird was knocking until he got some injector cleaner and started using 93 octane gas. Could be detonation. Just a thought. I have a bad knock but it isn't the engine, it's the transmission mount. Gotta put it in this weekend!

I was a full time ACTIVE Marine for a while and can tell you it's not all what it's cracked up to be. You talk to reserves and they're having fun....you know, screwing around on the ranges, etc. It's all fun 'n games till someone gets hurt. I have a strong feeling this country will be going to war w/ our new "you know who".

I had the very same problem with my '85 Z28. It turned out to be detination caused by the timing being way too far advanced. Unknown to me, my balancer's outer ring had slipped off of the hub, so when I set the timing, the marks were in the wrong place. Once I got a new balancer and set the timing, the problem was fixed!

Ya the marines will be a very interesting experience for you Pablo. Will change your life a lot. You may think it will not, but think again. I drive a desk for the Air Force all day, myself. Just remember to make the best of it, and do not give up on yourself in basic. It will be hard.

Good luck to you Pablo. Do your BEST!!!

EDIT: Just read all of the locked "Pablo" posts below. WOW, Pablo!!! Did you take a jackass pill to respond to people in such a mean way??? I'd be banned for talking to people like that. After all your fresh comments on "just doing" it and getting things done you admit that you (and your parents) have decided to go into the Marines so that they can/will straighten you out so that you can actually aspire to and finish something in your life? Man, please...

I'll give you ONE hint: better loose the 'tude (like TODAY) or you are in for a big hurtin'... Good luck and you WILL need it.

Uh, my parents and I? No, my decision is my decision only and its something I want to do, not have to do. I have the option to stay here and continue on any other path I want but i chose this one because right now its where my heart lies. As far as my other posts, it was a needed wake up call for this board, and control of my attitude and my emotions is well in hand and appropriate for a variety of situations. I am not a child, and attempts to "frighten" me about me being me will not work because i know me and I also know what to expect. Nice try though. As far as "you know who" thats just leftist rhetoric.. i dont hear people talking smack about all the blood on Bill Clintons hands, remember somalia? Almost as many american lives lost there as in our last "war". If you dont count the friendly fire casualties Id bet more of our men died in somalia anyways. And for what? No one was freed, no mission was accomplished, very much unlike our last war. How about all of our meals on wheels missions to every corner of the world, many of our people died to divert attention from this mans personal life. Id much rather go to war than go on some vague mission where the goal is not clear and no victory decisive. The chicoms would still be 40 years behind us if it wasnt for the technical advances the last administration gave them seemingly for campaign contributions. The world is such now that it would have to take an open act of aggresion to spark a "war" on the part of another nation and its less likely the stronger we and our allies become. Its called deterrance.

forgive the digression its just that this sortof crap pisses me off

long, however, spoken like a true redblooded american proud to have the chance and honor to fight for such a great country.

also the words spoken by an obviously not lower class individual, and just as obviously, words spoken by someone who is not ignorant, or unintelligent.

it is also true that the boards need an awakening, and it is not possible for me or jprevost to do so in the manner that pablo did. However, we didnt close those posts simply because pablo used aggresive tactics of communication. we also closed them because some of them were nontech, and/or rediculous.

and on another sidenote to the people who have been here the longest. sometimes some of us who have been here a long time forget what it was like to be newbies. and we forget that there is so much that we didnt used to know either. and we need to remember that, and be patient and understanding when people ask a question that has been asked 7 times already this week, or a question that is non tech. Education and time will help these newbies become veterans like us, and we need to educate them instead of yell at them and talk down to them. Unless they are completely ignorant.

pablo has helped a lot of people. dont think of him badly simply because he chooses different tactics to arise attention and get something done.

and i got the dumbest question wrong

they asked how many times a camshaft turns for every crank revolution, the correct answer is 1/2 turn but i got mixed up in my head thinking of how many times the crank spins for one camshaft turn and said two turns , hit the button.. then realized my mistake and said "doh!" and since the test is adaptive it went back to a really easy and dumb question

I thought about following my sister's footsteps and joining the Air Force but I changed my mind. I scored 87 on my Asvab. 89 on Auto/shop information. Lowest score was in Electronics, a 76. I know nobody really cares but I told ya anyway! From what I hear from my sister, if you can make it through Basic you pretty much have it made. Try to go in as an officer if you can though, you get more respect (money)!

As of 1 Jan 01,

a brand new USAF O1 will receive $1997.70 a month basic pay. There are also housing allowances $500-$700 a month (tax free) depending on location, food allowance is about $170 a month (tax free). Not to mention free medical/dental coverage.

As an enlisted member you won't hit these figures until the 10 year mark as an E5.

If you haven't already......GO TO SCHOOL if the military is what you want to do. If you have a degree already, man, you better re-think before you committ!!

That's some funny sheeeot, ()()... No military necessary for me, thx. I put in my dues in while at college and while in the school of hard knocks to get where I am today. Worth every second and heartache and reaping the rewards, finally.

Sounds like about equiv to a 40k salary. Not to shabby, but they gotcha by the short hairs for a while, eh?

It is probably an inoperative EGR valve/EGR system. If you are getting a code 32, I'll betcha that's wha tit is. What is happening is your EGR pintle is not allowing all/any burn gasses from the exhaust into the intake. (could be from bad EGR valve and/or bad EGR solenoid and/or vacuum leak in EGR system hoses and/or not enough exhaust backpressure, but not probable) The ECU thinks all is well and is advancing the ignition 4-6 degrees or so, which an EGR-introuced combustion mixture needs because it has slower flame travel than a mixture without it. BUT, because you have no EGR, you have "natural" 14.7:1 AFR and a faster flame travel, which causes detonation with the EGR advance in there.

If you have not played with your distributor, your timing should be ok but check it anyway. I would disassemble the EGR hoses/valve/etc and clean/repair/replace anything funky. then, you'll be on your path.

The EGR code will not set until a certain speed is met and the EGR operation does not cause a MAP change and/or O2 sensor change. if none of these changes are felt by the ECu when it ests for EGR, a code 32 is set... Now, you just gotta fix it!

Have fun
