Well I'll be putting on the K&N open element and valve covers this friday and wondered if I can remove the large black thing that sits next to the passenger valve cover. This is part of the smog pump right? Can I remove that and the plumbing connected to it? I'm going to leave the actual pump in place till I can locate a dummy wheel for it. I noticed the plumbing goes back to the firewall, does this need to be blocked? Thanx again.
Oklahoma is doing away with it't visual emissions inspection (woohoo) the end of August and I got mine inspect on Saturday.
Gutted cat is next.

Read the article in the tec. section about removing the smog pump. You dont need to buy a pulley, just re-route the belt. you will need a diferent belt lenght.I just did this recently myself.I needed a shorter belt then the one mentioned in the article.good luck

Make sure what your looking at isn't the heater hoses and valve before you take it apart. The air pump hoses don't go to the firewall they go to the exsuast manifolds and cat.
You can use the same belt, you just route it a different way.

Whatever you do, if you remove the little black box type thing (its called an Air Diverter valve)...DON'T throw it away, sell it. Those things can only be purchased from GM and brand new the cost almost $350.
Basically I'm removing the smog pump and air diverter (thanx pukka) to clean up the engine area and give it some room. I'll be keeping all the stuff just in case Oklahamo decides to go back to the test.

Or you can take the moving parts out of the pump and put the pump back on for the sake of having the pully. The pump itself isn't that big and really isn't in the way of anything, it's all the rest of that crap that clutters it all up. That way you can keep the same belt and the same routing.
