Re: egr problems

Code 32

This is one of those pesky codes to troubleshoot:

The ECM operates an EGR control solenoid to control EGR valve. EGR valve is normally closed, but ECM can pull (circuit 435 - Gray wire) down to ground to activate exhaust gas recirculation. ECM checks EGR effectiveness by periodically turning on and off EGR valve while monitoring for vacuum variation by MAP sensor at cruise speeds (above 50 mph, 35 to 55 Kpa, TPS 9% to 20%, no throttle change during test.). With EGR valve in closed position manifold vacuum will be greater with EGR being open. The change (delta vacuum) as measured by MAP sensor must be within acceptable values or otherwise code 32 will be set.

Vacuum drop due to EGR activation will also depend on exhaust system. If you have a free flowing exhaust system there will be very little back pressure and as result very little vacuum change between on-off. Replacement EGR valves come with restriction plates – you may have to play with them to find the right one.

Also there is the usual manual EGR valve check routine with a manual vacuum pump, to see how much manifold vacuum changes at about 2000 RPM.

I hope this helps.
