Re: coolant temp sensor

I believe it tells the ECU coolant is very cool. Car runs super rich.

Re: coolant temp sensor

I think thsi sensor is what causing our 88 formula to run rich after you drive it and restart it once it is warm. The car cannot tell the coolant is warm and is feeding extra gas into the mix thinking the car is a cold start situation.

It can also make the engine take longer to turn over. On my car, the CTS was reading that the engine was hot, yet it was sitting outside in 30* temperature for 8 hours.

Re: coolant temp sensor

It will run super rich. A failing cts will sometimes appear intermittent. One minute it will run fine the next it will stumble, hesitate and possibly blow black smoke. I've watched a failing CTS while datalogging and you can watch the commanded AFR jump all over the place and idle is erratic.

If the CTS has failed you could have a completely warmed motor and the CTS wont register it, which it tells the ecm it's running cold so it adds more fuel when in fact it doesn't need it. Often there are 2 sensors. One for the ECM and one for the temp guage.

Re: coolant temp sensor

My car wouldn't even start with a bad CTS. It stumbled and died after 10 seconds while driving when it died and when I tried to restart it the throttle bores instantly filled up with fuel and overflow fuel over off the TBI unit.

Re: coolant temp sensor

Funny this got posted up cause I just was changing the thermostat in my car and i barely tapped the coolant sensor and the whole-connector came off !! My car had been missing and I changed the plugs 4 times. Put the new sensor on and it runs great now!!!

I was changing the thermostat cause the intake had a slight leak and it looked like it was comming from the thero housing, actually turned out to be leaking thru the top of the sensor!!
