bought a 91 rs w/ 3o5 & 5 spd. car is really clean. and best part motor is already hanging on engine hoist after only 4 hrs of owning car. can we say engine swap time
can we say zz4 crate engine with some headers, 3 inch exhaust, & holley injection system, Now i need 5 spd to handle power. got a disc brake re end and its housing 373 ratio with limited slip.
Your t5 isnt gonna hold up long under all that power. I would look into swapping a t56 from a 4th gen in. 6sp manual, and alot beefier.
Also, you might consider getting your rear end from a 4th gen too. They have posi in them already, and depending on what car it is out of they can have a decent set of gears. My buddys camaro LS1 has 3.42 gears stock.
zz4 in hooked up and fired it, found a 94 z-28 manual gearbox its also in. putting new rearend in morning. bein time consumeing but worth it car will be a new beast when done, now the question what rear end ratio w/ stock 16 inch wheel setup. car is for rice burners stop light to stop light?????????

I have never had gears, but from what I read 3.73 would be great for light - light racing. However, if you want to do any highway cruising that will be a little steep. 3.42 might be better.
Did you say you got a t-56 tranny? With the 6th gear, you could probably get away with the 3.73 and it wouldnt be bad on the freeway though.

Adam, yes very pleased. yeah got a 6 spd. listen I am not bragging but when you have some money and know reall limit on a budget and a pretty much full blown shop with all thr right tools and toys it is pretty easy. actually the car is for my wife. but hay its all good. lol. when Im all down pics will be put up with all origanal and comparison with it being done.
Sounds fun. Well, my buddy has a 98SS with the LS1, and a t56 tranny. His rear end I think is a 3.42 stock and that car moves out. He is actually looking to upgrade to 3.73 eventually because people on his LS1 forum say it really wakes up the T-56.
I have heard 4.11 is very streetable with a T56. That will give you plenty of go at the lights. actually traction and not blowing up the rear end is the other things to tackle.

IDK if I would take gear out of my setup because of traction issues. If a vehicle has any type of real power it's probably not going to hook up too well on the street (assuming there are only two drive wheels). That's no reason to under-gear.

In my personal opinion, for a daily driver it is. If the car will see more track time and that is more important to the driver, then go with the lower gears. And I wouldn't call 3.73s "under gearing" it. To each their own I guess.
But what does it really matter. What I'm saying is going to 3.73s instead of 4.10s is going to do nothing for traction problems if you have an engine that is making any type of real power. That ZZ4 is going to be able to roast tires on the street either way you go. It's not like we're talking about an internally stock 305 TBI where traction might not be your biggest problem (189 RWHP probably is).
And you got the advantage of slightly easier on the car to get up to speed around town, and still so much OD in the trans that highway cruising is still happening at a very, very reasonable RPM. Crunch the numbers and you'll see. If you're going to dump coin on the installation kit, gears, a LSD, and install (whether you do it yourself, which requires time or you pay somebody to do it) you might as well do it right the first time.
Sure the car will still be fine, even great with 3.73s. But if additional traction is the reason you are telling yourself to go with 3.73s instead of the 4.10s you're going to have another thing coming when you lay into on street tires on the street in first gear.
okay guys here is the details, 4.10 gears, smoke tires down the street till you stop. 3.73 even worse. 4.10 with dot legal slicks, not bad hooks up better, but its a drivers car and you need to feather or slip clutch to hook it up when launching. But its fun stop light to stop light. yes I can spin tires in second gear to the redline with 3.73 gears from a standing start.
