454 throttle body - air cleaner fitment questions..

seems like the parts stores dont have any elements to fit my TBI 454.. what size elements are you guys with the BBC throttle body using? and anyone have pics of a BBC tb stock snorkel?

i believe i need atleast 3.5" to clear the throttle body itself, or maybe even 4"...

If you are having a height issue with the air cleaner, GM used spacers on many different vehicles of various heights. From something like 1/2" through 3". Can even stack them. Cars typically used the shorter spacers while trucks used the taller ones.

its not really a height issue, i have plenty of room under my suburban hood.. i also use the 1 3/4" heater riser for the BBC tb.... but i cant find a open element, that will clear the bbc throttle body injector pod, and still bolt shut..

Not a problem, the spacers I was referring to go on top of the TB unit. IOW, between the top of the TB and the bottom of the air cleaner.

IIRC, there is an air cleaner element that is 14" dia and 4" tall. Not sure of the app.

Even the stock air cleaner housing should still fit. The pods are no different. I guess I don't get where the clearance issue is.

well the stock was dual stud.. the 454 tb was a single stud.. plus i sold my dual stud and tb spacer... so i got rid of my stock chopped up snorkel i made a element.. but b4 i got rid of it, i tried to fit the stock collar/spacer that the breather plugs into.. and it wouldn't even fit over the 454 tb.. it was a tight fit, and if anything hampered air flow..

Re: 454 throttle body - air cleaner fitment questions..

maybe you guys can help me... how do i get my new open element to tighten up with the screw in the middle? as we all know the TBI, has a funny angle stud for the cleaner... the stud that came with my element is straight... i need something that will bend but is off centered and tall enough to fit my 14x4 cleaner...

where can i find a bigger bent stud? anyone with this problem?

I ended up making one. Length of steel rod (1/4" IIRC, some are 5/16"), and a die to thread it. Vice and hammer to bend it. Adjusted the bend angles to adjust the offset as it was being fit up.

You still have yet to learn the art of persuation. Take rod and grasp with both hands and bend. If it doesn't fit, make it fit. And if its too short, go get some coarse thread 1/4 inch all thread and make another one that does fit.

Re: 454 throttle body - air cleaner fitment questions..

When I bought my 7.4L TBI I believe it came with the rod to attach the AC to it? It appears as a .25 inch rod to what ever lenght you need. Just need appropriate thread at each end with correct offset

only pic i got so far, but i bent it with 2 vice grips like Rbob said... its a 14x4 WIX filter... runs great with the 454tb.. i need to get a slightly smaller wingnut but other than that, it works great... but i may bend another rod to use this wignut...
