The Rebuild of a 350 tbi

hello everyone I am compleetly new to TBI, I know nothing about it.I am not new to the TGO or my camaro wich is TPI

This thread will be the start of the rebuild with many pics and questions by myself. I am rebuilding it in my school(montogomerary college, Rockville md) in my engine repair calss.

This engine was apparently out of a 89 camaro
ON the block their are the numbers "21" and "350" what does the 21 mean?
The wiring harness,TB, manifolds, dist. and oil pan look like they will need to be replaced.

This build will be up for sale after rebuild.( which will be the end of the semiester) Also it will be semi stock mabe a bigger cam but nothing wallet braking.
I Have my 87 iroc for braking my wallet

Re: The Rebuild of a 350 tbi

Hey Toxik

That's a nice find - a complete motor. This motor looks like it was installed in P-Chassis VAN - see that oil dips stick reaching all the way to the front of the motor. Other than that it is tough to say what its internal condition is. You'll have to rip into it. The first thing I would check into head casting numbers and count number of intake manifold bolts. If you have 12 bolts (6 on each side) holding intake down would indicate a non vorteck motor. Most likely than this motor is equipped with swirl port heads which are not desirable for performance applications since they were designed for low RPM torque and lower emissions. Pull a valve cover record head casting numbers. To be certain that you have a 350 check a cast boss just above oil filter mount - in the back of the driver side head. It is covered with AIR tube now, you'll have to move it and scrape crud off. If you see 5.7 L GM you are in good shape - 350CID with a single piece seal! Short block will make a good foundation for a street engine, while heads a subject to discovery and further debate.

Re: The Rebuild of a 350 tbi

Thank you man, ill clean it up abit and see what i can find. ill let you guys know later what i find!

iight im back..

So the numbers that i have found after cleaning with a rag brake clean and a razor.

the #'s are 10054727(what do these numbers mean) and then their it says 5.7 lgm

so if internals are good this would be a good foundation?
do people what this engine?
I have an option to bring it back b.c they lied to me and this is not what i originaly wanted, but if i know i could sell this i dont mind keeping it

Re: The Rebuild of a 350 tbi

toxik

I did a quick search and this is what 10054727 block casting number returns:->

CID: 350 5.7L
Years: 89-93
Vin: 7
Details: TBI, roller lifters, center bolt valve covers, high swirl intake ports, right hand dipstick, 2 or 4 bolt mains, one piece rear seal, some were "Made in Canada"
Crank # 14088526 14088535
Heads #: 14102193 14102191 10110810

If you have a four bolt main it will make a good short block foundation provided that all critical tolerances and dimensions check out. From the pictures it appears that this engine has never been taken apart. I could be wrong - but a careful inspections of internals is in order before any plans can be made.

When taking parts off - document disassembly - take plenty of pictures and bag everything (get a box of 1G Zip lock bags from costco) and label. Do not toss anything!

The gods on mount Olympus must be smiling
have fun - every time I take the engine apart ( and put it back together) I feel as if design engineers that designed original SBC back in early '50s are still around telling their stories, but now I am getting sentimental.
