I know this has been posted alot, but none seem quite the same, and they are all really long already. I'm sorry to those of you who don't like to have another added.
Anyway.
I have an 89 RS Camaro, 305 TBI.
It started really hard this morning. It usually cranks a little before it starts. Same thing today, but when it did it died. Did this about 5-8 times. Usually I don't touch the gas, today I did, cause it dosen't die. When I did get it running I started it, on the gas. I held the rpm at 3,000 (give or take) and slowly let it down. It was fine. Idles a little low, but that has been normal so far once it's warmed up.
I drove it until lunch. On my way back to work I pulled out of the parts store parking lot, "tried to" and it reved fine, until I let the clutch out. Then the rpm just went down, and it died.
After that, it was cranking, sounded like no fuel/fire, but if you gave it gas it would sputter. Only sputtered irradically. I let it sit about 20 min. Then started it to back it into a parking spot, it made it, barely. Then died. (I had to keep the engine reved, and slip the clutch to do this. No more then maybe 2,500 3,000 rpm)
Now after work it will start if I put gas in the TBI, dies once that's burned off. But if I let the fuel system prime 3 or 4 times it will start. Only for about 2/3 seconds. But it does start.
So my thought is the fuel filter (no idea how old), FPR, or a weak pump.
What do y'all think?
I am probably going to put the filter on it tomorrow, and check the fuel press.
I will let you know what happens.
Thanks for you imput.
BTW sorry for the long post.
Sounds like the same problem i was having a while back and it was caused by a weak fuel pump. And dont let the fuel pressure fool you, it may be fine at idle then it will let out on you under a load. Good luck.
It could be a number of things. Fuel pump relay, fuel pump, filter, vats, other electronic part, etc...
Check the car for codes if the Service Engine light it on. You can do this with a paperclip. There is a howto somewhere around here. Hopefully that will help to narrow things down. You should replace the fuel filter anyway if its old.
I know how to pull the codes, just haden't done it yet.
It dosen't idle. I will only "run" if I have my foot on the gas.
The security light isn't on, have tried both keys, (one cut in late OCT or early NOV). I am now thinking weak pump or bad injectors.
I put the filter on today. It starts better, still only runs for 3 or 4 sec's. A little better. The old one really wasen't as bad as I thought it would be.
I had a friend crank it so I could see the injectors spary. When you first start to crank they spray good, I think they could be a little better, but good. Once it starts it continues to spray good, then quickly goes down to what looks like the water coming from a faucet turned on low. It kinda twist around itself. (if that makes sense to you), or like pouring water out of a bucket slowly.
Anyway that was my though.
The codes I had when I bought the car were 13,24, and 21 or 22(TPS).
I put a new TPS on a few months ago.
Now I have this.
13 is oxygen sensor circuit
24 Vehical Speed Sensor
44 Lean Exhaust
I have not gotten to the o2, dosen't matter at this point, cause car won't run to get warm to read from o2.
VSS has wires cut, have not gotten to, has drivin fine so far. But a question. On a 5 speed does that control anything but the shift light.
Lean exhuast, (new code)
From my haynes,
Malfuntioning fuel injector, vacum leak, low fuel press, bad elec conn, open or short in circ, defective MAP, defective o2, defective ECM.
My friend forgot his press guage today, (takes a little bit sometimes), Untill I get that, I am going to start with the vacum lines, fuses are good, doubt the elec is bad, but will look. Other then that I will probably test the injectors.
Let me know what you think or if you think I should check something else.
One more question, which fuel line is the supply to the TBI, (standing on the D/S of car looking to P/S first or second?
