350 TBI troubleshooting ?

So i had my 350 swap completed and im pretty happy after the headache the shop caused me. They pretty much gave me a new engine that wasnt tuned and now that thats all worked out ive still got a minor issue that im noticing that they swear isnt a concern.

My car has a small surge, it usually happens when the car is warmed up, mostly when i run into a store and come back out and start it up to drive home it surges, not bad usually only about from idle to 1100-1200 but its enough to notice, it will correct itself after driving but its pretty annoying when i pull up to a light or stop the car and it kinda jerks on me. I was told by the shop that the Ignition Control module should be replaced and at that point i cut ties with them because of some issues that came up during the swap, During the swap i took the liberty of replacing the Battery, cap, rotor, wires, alternator, O2 sensor, and PCM, also i was told originally the cause of the surge was the Coolant temp sensor which i replaced and it doesnt surge as bad as it originally did. All of my cables and such around the TBI check out so im kinda stumped on what to do next, i dont wanna replace parts unless i have to

surge for me was lean. also I idle OL with zero IAC counts. that helped too.

i would do some datalogs and see what that tells you.

Re: 350 TBI troubleshooting ?

The surge itself isn't the problem. Something is making the engine want to stall, and the computer is sensing that and opening the IAC valve rapidly to prevent a stall, that's what the surging is.

Kind of hard to troubleshoot without more information. I had similar symptoms and it was the TPS. Do you tune your own rig? If so adjust the idle screw so it idles at around 5-10 IAC steps.

Re: 350 TBI troubleshooting ?

I didnt tune it myself, it was tuned by the shop. Thats where things went sour with them. Sometimes however when i throw the car into drive or reverse the car will stall out also, this only happens when its surging, ill get out there tomorrow and mess around with the tps and see if that helps at all.

Also what are some signs that i still am running a 305 chip on my 350? Would it even run at all? Would it idle horribly? Or is there really no difference? I was told by the shop i would be getting a new chip but cant seem to find any mention of a chip on the papers that i have from the shop. Or i dont see a description of reprogramming my current chip. I noticed tonight when i took her out on the highway that i still in fact have my speed limiter on the chip which i thought was specific to the chip? I read in some thread that when you "tune" a chip or reburn the current chip you have you would loose things like a limiter? I was told that they "tuned" the car to get it to run right and right now im running the stock 305 tbi and injectors untill i can get home and throw on a new fuel pump and some bigger ones. Im thinking i should start investing in some chip burning equipment. Will i have to get the car retuned when i put on the bigger injectors and the better fuel pump?

Re: 350 TBI troubleshooting ?

You really need to start with a datalog. It will tell you or us what possible issues are. Yes I suspect the car will run on 305 chip. since the CID changed I suspect the crank start and cold runnning will be off. the NB02 should correct for closed loop and add sufficiennt gas. Pumpshot(AE) and most importantly WOT(PE) may be off. you may be able to get by with stock injectors running at higher pressure. If you go that route again a datalog and a corrected chip is required. Build or buy a ALDL cable and get the datalog(s) started. Did the shop burn multiple chips?

Re: 350 TBI troubleshooting ?

I have no idea if the shop even burned a chip. I was told they installed a 350 chip but i still have my speed limiter leading me to suspect that they didnt change the chip at all, in which case there will be problems. Looks like ill have to go out an buy a ALDL cable. Are these easily bought at like advance or napa? Or are they only found online?

Re: 350 TBI troubleshooting ?

I would buy from Craig Moates. Check his website. Or build you own. May be insructions in stickies or search or go to winALDL site or build info.
