Re: How the heck does the coil mount on the manifold???
2 things come to mind, either you have the brackets backwards, or they are both the same bracket.
look where i have circled the bracket in red at & see if the other bracket has less of a lip on it in that area. if it does swap the brackets around & see how it fits.
if they are the same, you can grind the bracket down till it clears the intake in the area where i have it circled.
the green line is about how much needs to be removed if they are the same.
also, flip the bolt around so the head of the bolt is closest to the TBI.
Re: How the heck does the coil mount on the manifold???
Thanks for the suggestions, I got it off a TBI camaro at the pull-a-part at the way they position the cars in the air I couldn't see how it was mounted when I leaned over to take it off. I'm not even sure if it was lined up with the holes when it was on that car.
I may play with the bracket a bit and see what I can come up with
----------
But someone....anyone....with a stock TBI engine could pull the air cleaner, grab a camera, snap a quick picture of how there's is mounted it would be much appreciated

Re: How the heck does the coil mount on the manifold???
Can the two parts of the bracket be mated together and mounted on one side of the coil, where one part of the bracket passes underneath the coil? That might allow you to mount it in the location in the picture.
On my engine, I modified just one of the brackets to mount the coil lower than the stock position in order to clear an open element air cleaner. It only uses the modified bracket and the mounting hole furthest away from the distributor. I won't be able to get you a pic of it for a little over a week though.
Re: How the heck does the coil mount on the manifold???
Here are pics of my modified coil mount to provide clearance for a drop base air cleaner. The first pic is the stock mount removed from the coil and its orientation as I remember it. The 2nd is half of the mount that I modified so it can be flipped over and clear the epxoy encapsulated coil. You can also see a couple washers attached to provide a little clearance w/ the manifold. The 3rd pic shows it assembled.
Re: How the heck does the coil mount on the manifold???
Here are pics of it installed. You can see how much lower the coil sits w/ respect to the distributor and throttle body. There's an air gap on all sides between the coil and manifold. The only thing that might be an issue is the limitation imposed on turning the distributor for timing. In my case it wasn't a problem.
