TBI Spacer from Horsepower TV

Recently Horsepower tv had a 92 Camaro 305 TBI on their show...they did a few easy mods...

One of which was a spacer for the TBI, has anyone installed a tbi spacer plate? I was wondering if they fit with the stock air cleaner, and will the hood close, or do you have to have a modified air intake? I would love to get one, but I'm not sure it will fit on a 92 firebird. I want to be able to close my hood..ha

Anyone?

Re: TBI Spacer from Horsepower TV

im sure it will fit but you might want to measure it. use something that is one inch thick and try to close the hood slowly. i installed a tbi spacer and you only fell a little difference in performance.

Re: TBI Spacer from Horsepower TV

Remember that they used that "self service" CAI though? This seemed a lot lower than the standard air cleaner. That was cool in itself; make your own, and send the rest back! Lastly, wasn't this a total serpentine setup? How did they get away with an electric water pump and just skip the water pump by getting a shorter belt? I layed awake thinking of the routing on a TPI serpentine!!!!!! I thought I needed one with an idler pulley on it, which costs a fortune!

Maybe.

Your stock intake manifold has already a hole between the 2 trottle bores, allowing to draw air from both throttle bores.

Also trottle linkage (including tv cable) will have to be adjusted properly.

Whait untill theyr finished. Except full exhaust it looks like they are entertaining, for now.

Save up that 100$ for:

1. EBL flash (plug and learn to tune), aprox 185hp
2. flat base cold air cleaner,... 188hp (as #1. approx 173hp)
3. full exhaust,... 205hp
4. 40+psi fuel pump and AFPR,... 205hp
5. cam or cam and heads,... 230 to 300hp (at this point a better flowing intake manifold would be better and go on at the same time)
6. if your combination is good for 300+ hp, better flowing TB and bigger injectors will be needed.
7. you are getting bored and its thime for the 100$ TB spacer

*hp# should be preatty close if your LO3 still has 170hp.

The 100$ spacer alone with everithing set correctly should gain 0-2hp maaayyybe 3?

Also I did try and used the spectre TB hat with a wery similar 4" "cai", its not what I ended up with. EBL will allowe u to see the air themperature and restriction of different air intakes easily.

Re: TBI Spacer from Horsepower TV

I don't know if the firebird had a different clearence than the Camaro, but I actually ordered the 1.5" spacer from CFM a few years ago and it fit on mine (very, very close though). I later got the TBI Edelbrock performer intake which is a .25" higher than the factory one and then my factory airbox was hitting my hood. I later got an open element with a dropbase and it still wouldn't clear. I did a headswap this summer and while I had the spacer off my dad took it to his shop and milled a quarter inch off it..works fine now. I guess what I'm saying is it should work with your factory setup but you may have trouble down the road if you change the airbox or intake.

Re: TBI Spacer from Horsepower TV

Dont you have to get fuel line adpaters since the TB will sit higher and the fuel line wont reach...

How did you go 1.25" without havign to mod the fuel line going to the TB unit?

Mines hard line, so i dont see it bending or stretching any to add 1.25" to the line to make it to the TB...

I was going to get these when i did mine...what did you guys do with your TBI and spacers?

Save some more and get something else. A less than 100hp NOS kit is still IMHO the best bang for the $.

I just put a vortec style motor in my car and I was able to finagle the hard lines to work. I had a spacer, but it won't work with my motor and lower firebird hood.

Thomas, what did the EBL tell you about the CAI? How much temp drop did you get?

Re: TBI Spacer from Horsepower TV

Unfortunately I did not have the EBL wen I tried the spectre hat with a cone filter squesed next to the purge cannister. It wasent a CAI since engine warmed up quicker then with the stock air intake (with disabeled heat reiser), but not as radical as with the open element.

Aniway, out side themp, speed, rpm, engine load and engine run time do affect IAT alot and its easy to observe in a playback of a EBL datalog.
