Quick questions about a 91 Camaro I'm looking at.

I'm currently looking at a 91 Camaro. I believe it's a Z28 since it has the Hood Blisters & is a 305 TBI. Besides interior work needing to be done the only major thing is the Fuel Pump. I know this car has sat in one spot for a long time at one house. Now it is 2 blocks over sitting in another spot.

My pops was talking about the car sitting there for however long and how long it's been since it's last ran. Is that really a problem or no? Reason I ask is because I know a lot you get engines from junkyards and I'm assuming sludge would build up I'm not sure. Can someone explain what problems there are from an engine sitting there?

If there is sludge or whatever what I was thinkin was, new Fuel Pump, then do an oil change and use SeaFoam and that should get rid of the crap inside. Would that be a good route to go?

The car is being sold @ $800 and the only major fix is the Fuel Pump and interior work. The guy said the engine will run but only when pouring gas into the car, but then backpressure builds up and a lil flame comes thru the carb.

Thanks for any and all help guys!

If the car is a 91 with TBI, it's not a Z28. How long has the car been sitting? I don't like buying car's from people who pour fuel into an engine on a car they know needs a fuel pump.

I would have him start it what he can. If it's shooting out flames hes putting to much in.
I also wouldn't do anymore then sea foam. When you do start it, put some Marvle Mystery Oil in it. This will recondition the seals. I am also sure you will have a leak or two. But this will hold it together for a while.
When you do start it, drive it easy give it time to "break in" again. You will be less likely to blow out an old seal.
Do you know what all is involed with to change the pump? It's some work but worth it.

Re: Quick questions about a 91 Camaro I'm looking at.

Might not even need a fuel pump - many folks don't know what makes the FP run, and when it doesn't, they assume it's bad. Might be a simple Oil Pressure Sending Unit, a relay, a fuse, etc.

I drove 4 hours with an empty trailer in tow for a 1992 RS that "had a bad fuel pump" and a "blown head gasket". After I towed it back 4 hours home, I swapped out the fuel pump relay, and straight wired the fan to always run with key on, charged the battery, and the engine ran like brand new!

You just never know - but the fun is in the "making it happen" - for $800 if the body is in decent shape, you can't hardly go wrong (unless you need to drive this car tomorrow because it's your only ride).
